Alright, quick update & then time to go to sleep.

Got some more sealer today - PPG DPLF; stuff shot wonderfully. Laid it on the doors, tailgate, & hatch. Let it flash for a few hours while I started sanding the body/fenders/hood.

Started shooting base at about 9:00. Couple quick pics. Base went down great; starting to look like a real truck!

I'll shoot clear on all this stuff in the morning. Let it flash off, unhang it all, finish sanding the body, fenders, & hood, seal it all, base it all, and hopefully clear it tomorrow night!:p Wish me luck. Very well may be our last warm day tomorrow & I've got to go back to work Thursday.

Your 60 is going to be straighter and cleaner than when it came off the lot! Great progress... so glad you back to it!
 
It looks FANTASTIC man! Can't wait to see the reassembly!

I have to clean my computer screen every time I view your thread. Any little speck of dust on my screen looks like a run in the paint, LOL!!
 
What was the overall success/issues with replacing the rear seat brackets? I like your approach of cutting the entire piece out of a donor vehicle wheelwell. Could this then be welded in to a truck to replace the rusted out section?

I'm trying to find the best solution to my own rusty seat bracket issues.

I won't, I'll be one of those harassing him to do a trip in in so I can see it all for myself! :D Another 4Runner and 60 Series trip out to play, what better idea, right!

So I've been saving this question for this point..

How are you going to address all the door, hood, and window hardware?

Refinish via blast and re-zinc the rods, replace the plastic bits, etc? How about all the interior trim etc...I know you have some idaes already since you've gone this far.

Have fun in Japan, that's what, 2 trips w/i 2 years now, lucky stiff!

So, the way I did it on the passenger side was (1) cut the pieces (3 in all) out of a donor truck, (2) cut my rusty turds out, (3) use rusty turds as templates to cut donors accordingly, (4) weld in donors, grind welds, coat, done. By far, this is the easiest. If you choose to do it this way you will need the inner seat pivot, the wheel well itself, and the outer "brace". You can just about guarantee they will all be bad.

The way I did the drivers side was a bit different as I did not have a worthy donor. I cut my rusty turds out, made templates out of sheet metal & welded them it. There are a few tricky radii & contours in this area, so if you go this route be conscientious of this when you make your cuts.

Well, each is a little different. Depending on condition, I will salvage what I can. For instance, most all of my door stuff is in great shape. Anything that is long gone or nasty I will replace with new hardware. I may not use OEM, but will get fasteners of the same property (one benefit of being an engineer @ Toyota - access to engineering drawings!)

As for interior; I have a new headliner, dash pad, & front carpet kit sitting in the attic. I plan on reusing the seats & trim panels as they are all in good shape (and this is meant to be an actual offroad/camping truck - not a show queen!).
For the cargo area you probably recall that I shot bedliner across the entire interior (including the back of the 2nd row seat). I am planning on leaving carpet out of the cargo area so that I can still carry stuff without any worries). I am planning on making side cargo panels similar to the ones Kevin makes, big difference is that I won't be storing anything inside my 1/4's - except for a couple amps & 2 slim mount 10" subwoofers :D.

It's actually 3 in 2 years. . . Unfortunately, I don't really enjoy going over - I hate being away from home (especially now that we have a new baby). On the bright side, Momma left for Phx this morning to go see family while I'm gone, so that should ease the pain.

And on top of that this trip will only be 2 weeks; so that will help as well. Last trip was 5 weeks - talk about homesick!

Unbelievable, I just bought my first 84 fj60 yesterday and found this site tonight and read your entire thread. I dont know wheather to be inspired or to return the 60 in a discouraged manner:doh:..........All I came on this site looking for was a wiper motor:meh:

Hurry and give us a finish so I to can believe that maybe, someday............:beer::beer::beer:
 
Beautiful truck, as much as I believe in function over form I almost dont like the idea of you wheeling your 60. It is way to nice to hurt, so much attention and prep to make it a beautiful truck and your not even done yet!

I know, I think I may have to take a screwdriver or a key to the body or somthing to get over the fear of damaging it. LOL

On a serious note, I do plan on my FJ60 being a daily driver, camping vehicle, and "light" wheeler. I'm sure I won't be running Hells Revenge with it, but. . .
 
Just looking at it though, it will be better than when it first came off the line. Its beautiful and should be very durable and nice. Taking a awesome platform and making it even better!
