If its anything like POR-15 it bonds to rust better the bare metal anyway. So I wouldnt worry about it. I thought just swapping a frame was good, you stepped it up a few notches. Looks good! I dont think I would have the patients to do all this work when a frame isnt that much more.

This may be a stupid question, but why didnt you paint the inside frame rails when you had them split? It doesnt look like you can paint them as well now.

I read up on the zero rust web site and it says (like POR), not big deal on the rust.

Not a dumb question on the inner frame rails. I was afraid to paint too close to where I was welding. I probably should have painted the majority of it thought just to ensure 80% of it was well coated. Now I have to be more clever about painting it... stay tuned!

I work as a mechanical engineer making/designing aluminum beverage cans - like the ones half of you are drinking beer out of right now! As for the travel... well, the excitement of that has long since left me - it really does make it difficult to get stuff done.

Most of the tools you see are in my garage, only one part so far was made on the lathe at work.

Frame Painting

Got 2 hrs on the 60 on Thursday night... pretty much a disaster in my books. I had intended on painting the inside of the frame rails with a sponge. The idea was to tie a wire to the sponge and play "tug-of-war" with the sponge back and forth until the inside was coated. It worked alright, until the sponge ripped and I had to cut the frame rail open to get the sponge out .

Here is the paint supplies I used. The Zero Rust came from the zerorust zero rust protection rust removal, rust prevention, rust proofing web site, which is really another paint company.

Frame Painting

Got 3.5 hours on Saturday on the 60. I had to start by welding the inner frame rail back in to place. I then tried the next method which was using a weed/garden sprayer. The garden sprayer worked ok, didn't really "spray", but it put a quart of paint into each frame rail .

As a note, I used a second sponge and ran it through the passenger rail to help even out the paint. It worked well when I tied up the sponge better . I tried on the driver side, but forget that you can't get a sponge through the tubes for the power steering . Oh, well... there is plenty of paint in there now!

Frame Painting

I finished up later in the day on Saturday by painting the bottom and sides of the frame with my $10 HF spray gun which worked well.

If you have the room for it, an idea could be to tape all holes in the frame, raise it as much as you can in one end, and keep the other in some sort of big bucket. Then spray the inside with a underbody-gun with the thin nozzle on the hoze. If you thin the paint alot, and collect what runs out, you should be able to re-use it in the gun, and redo the procedure a couple of times, just to make sure all is coated.

This was the same idea... I just didn't get to reuse the paint. I had to thin it 30-40% to get it to come out of the sprayer!

Frame Painting

Got 30 minutes on the 60 tonight. I removed the boards used to hold the frame and rested the frame on towels laid over buckets. Then I used a sponge brush to touch up the spots where I was holding the frame.

Got 1hr 20 minutes on the 60 today. I got really anal and decided to flip the frame and paint the inside AGAIN! This time all the paint would settle to the bottom. I am now done with the frame .

Wow you started this thread a year ago and thats all you have done?? Looks amazing I would have gotten sick of it and given up a few dozen times in that amount of time. So...whats the next step?
