Disassembly work

1 hour on the 60 yesterday. Got the springs pulled from the front axle. Also got the bushings pulled out of the frame from the front shackle hangers. Both front springs had a broken leaf!

what are you doing next? You should be close to being all the way down to the frame.

Unfortunately, I am still debating that one somewhat. One of the major handicaps I have is lack of space. Maybe someone out there can chime in on past experience.

Option 1:
* Tear down to frame.
* Move the body and store it offsite. My brother in law lives on an old farm and will let me store it outside until he moves (could be anytime ).
* Paint the frame and axles.
* Move the finished mobile frame outside for storage.
* Move body back into garage.
* Finish body. Mate to frame.

Option 2: (leaning this way - non traditional path)
* Tear down to frame.
* Put bare frame in backyard to store (painted or un-painted?)
* Finish body.
* Bring frame inside and mate to body.

I like option 2 cause it means not storing things offsite. I don't like the idea of mice in the body. I have a lot of body work to do, so I would hate to leave the finished frame outside for so long as well.

Disassembly work

Got an hour on the 60 last night. Took the brake lines and fuel lines off the frame. Had to spend some time cleaning up the garage and hauling some parts outside for storage.

Frame is now stripped to the rear axle.

I would clean it up and paint that frame first thing!,

One of the things im regretting about not taking the body off for my build is that I won't be able to get paint on some of the areas on the top the frame rails.

When I replace my Body Bushings, that will be as close to body off frame as I'll get, I will probably be able to get paint (Rust Bullet) on Most of it then.

I, like you, have very little space to work with.

Got 1hr and 20min on the 60 last night. Removed the rear shocks (someone put Rancos on) and removed the rear schackle bolts. It took a fraction of the time to get the rear bolts out.

Don't confuse the options with not painting the frame. The difference is that rather than moving the body out and painting the frame (attaching axles, springs etc) vs. working on the body first is just the order of operations.

I am not going to strip it down this far and not paint it .

No, of course not, I knew that, I just meant to do that first so that if you end up storing it,It will be protected, no matter what you're next plan of attack is.

When i first started doing all this I had no idea that Cruiser Frames were so succeptible to rust. not until IH8mud.com

Disassembly work

Spent 2 hours and 40 minutes between Friday and Saturday on the 60. Got the rear shackle pins removed using a 2 jaw puller (no spray, no heat). The front spring pins were tough. I ended up cutting the military wrap and leaving the pin for now. Axle is out, springs are off - took a propane torch, pb blaster and an impact wrench for an hour! Not much left on the frame now .

Disassembly work

Got an hour on the 60 last night. Removed the rear bump stops, brake line brackets and axle vent hose. Broke two of the rear bump stop bolts off - on on each side. Need to fix those still.

Tried getting the spring pins out, but I am going to have to cut them out.

Frame is out!

Spent 3hr and 20 minutes yesterday on the 60, finally got some pictures of it today. I moved the frame out from under the body and rolled the body to the other side by myself.

Got the rear spring pins and all the bushings out. Removed the spare tire carrier as well - it's in good shape, just some surface rust and a rebuild of the mechanism in order. I started grinding off the rivets for the rusty section in the rear too.

Here you can see the rear unboxed sections. I am planning on removing the channel and boxing the frame. Nothing special here.

Spare tire carrier looks ok. No major rust, just surface.

This is the part that concerns me. I am thinking of cutting this section out and welding in new. Anyone see any problems as long as there is sufficient patch panels?

I don't think it looks all bad.
Why not just grind the surface first and see how it looks - it really just looks like surface rust to me. I take it you're going to eventually POR it.

The only bad spot looks like the X-member.. I can see through it!

Good call on the rear spring hangers. I will sand blast before doing any cutting.

Frame Prep

Spent 30 minutes on the 60 tonight until the battery in the drill died. I think the quickest approch to removing the buck rivets is to grind them flat and drill them out. Still have a lot to go.

Frame Rust

Well, I took a closer look at the areas behind the rear spring pin. Sorry Winston, but we were both wrong. I did the old screwdriver trick (with a light tap of the hammer). The driver side of 2-3" long and the passenger side is small.

I am going to have to grind off the center cross member and cut out/weld in patches for these areas. I will also have to weld in some extra material for strength. I can feel a ton of dirt in the frame, so it must of caused the rot.
