anyone tried it?
i have a brand new 8274 and want to mount it on the back (was supposed to go on the front but change of plans), i have not found any good feedback on low profile winches hence the question.
i am suspecting it will be the lubrication that will be the main issue here and maybe the seal between the motor and the gear box ...
yes, no, fawk off - here is what you need:
 
i have not seen that ever done...and just as you suspected...i would be leary of that seal between the case and motor...

the motor is kinda offset as i remeber...so you could keep the motor to the top when its mounted flat...that would protect that seal a bit more....but the mounting holes will be facing down :hhmm:

my inquiring mind needs to know if anybody has done this also now
 
see, that is one of the things i loved about the 8274, no stress on the bolts. it was mounted with the bolts just holding the winch tight to the mount but the winch housing supplied or endured all the stress unlike the low profile winches which had the full stress on the 4 bolts and housing recepticals.
if i was to do it this way then the one end can be rotated with no issue and the other would have to be mounted with the housing tight to the mount ... but then, is the bottom of the housing strong enough for that type of pull?

actually, to keep the motor away from the bumper, it would mount facing up...and you'll have oiling issues regardless :)

Per yer other post, I've got a MM V10 on my FZJ80 and it's worked every time I've needed it.
 
You'd have to bring the oil level up to the where it normally sits which is just below the main drum seal, there is a breathing hole drilled between the motor and the top housing that would have to be plugged, the motor bearing that sits in the top housing is not sealed well and would allow oil into the motor. I think you could weld mounting points on the bottom of the winch and clock the other plate to mount from the bottom.

All that being said I wouldn't do it, chances are something would fxxx up and oil would make it into the motor. And, if the truck is for cdn or north american wet/snow/salt regions then say good bye to that winch in a few years, you'd have to toss the solenoid pack anyway and use an albright remote located pack.

I'd mount a low profile right in the bumper up high in front of the gas tank, a 12000lb min, toss the solenoid pack as well and use the albright, but....if in this environment I would attach it to a receiver and do just plug and play mainly because low profiles are s*** and low to take water in. They actually have drain holes and are not sealed - not meant for submersing.
 
PnP winches are the devil...know a few guys with them, and it seems they either leave them on, killing approach/departure, or leave them buried in the rig where it takes forever to get them out, and half the time the mount receiver is buried and the winch can't even be installed anyways...

then the vast majority of mounts rely on a single centered receiver, and ANY side pull is a disaster waiting to happen. A dual-receiver mount (H-design) is far superior, especially if hooking a 12k winch on there, and helps prevent mount/frame bending...but also is a bigger pain to haul around...
 
that would be another option, PTO front, electric into H reciever to be mounted BEFORE entering obstacle. this would allow the owner to install in the front for when the sheer pin goes in the PTO ...

hummm, but then still what is a good winch, i have been looking at the MM12000 and it "seems" to be the cats ass for low profile winches ...

but i am here for the education so don't hold back
 
I've got the MM V10 on my FZJ80 with no complaints...switched it to synthetic, and I've thus far had no issues withe MOSFET controller...and the variable-speed remote is REALLY nice.

Nothing likes a Wisconsin winter...my old TMax corroded the first winter...this one has lasted thru one so far and is starting it's 2nd

I'll agree that they arent the best, but a winch fixed on the back of a truck is pretty dicy from the get go as far as corrosion and abuse goes. An expedition vehicle is not a comp vehicle, usually you have lots of time to take it on an off, and "most" of the time we are looking at straight pulls to get out.

9 times out of 10 on an expedition rig if the truck gets stuck the pull will be from the front - so the mile marker would be ok, we had two of them here and they were good, needed new brushes after some use but everything else held up well. Most winch companies are using parts sourced from china now - even warn, if that is of concern then do some research, even if it says "made in usa" the parts can still be coming from china of course.

Please ditch the idea of the pto on the front, an expedition vehicle should have easily sourced parts - 8274 is your best bet, and......people 9/10 always abuse the pto at the worst times.

If you do fix the low profile to the back then make sure you take it a part and seal the s*** out of it first - and like I said use the remote located albright solenoid or you might as well throw the winch in the garbage after one winter or some deep water.
 
i have talked and talked to the owner about ditching the PTO but he is dead set on it. he is paying the build and i have done my obligation of showing him the downsides but ...
looks like a MM12000 for the rear. they are water proof and the HD version so it should work. he is also a maintanence nut so i am sure that puppy will be looked after.
he also wants the PTO drive for other attachments as an option, make sense to me. PTO winch doesn't.

maybe install the 8274 above the PTO, then when the "light comes on" he can ditch the PTO and have the 8274 already to go.
