This thread aint' dead! ..........yet......

As you can tell, I've been enjoying not working on the cruiser for a while now. I had a near miss on buying a 45 so the fever grew to a pitch until I decided to finish the project I have.

The cure: restoring the winch.

Plan is to clean it up and change all the wear parts. It's had a great 33 years, and I'm hoping to never have to open it up again.

Tear down went ok, other than the fact that I scored the wall of the lower housing while punching out the needle bearings. It's not deep but I'm not sure if I should just roll with it or get a new housing....

In the second pic you can see where the PO had some abuse happen.... the casting is cracked but fixable, got a quote for 30$. Can't go wrong!\

I spent most of the first day taking apart a mini water heater and installing the element and control on my parts washer. Should be able to get better results now! I also changed the sand blaster over to glass bead again for all the aluminium parts. Not sure if I will just clear coat or paint the winch at this point.

Got all the parts hot tanked and bead blasted today. I also ordered all the wear parts from Amazon. Turns out they are cheaper and faster than the warn supplier in Canada.

To paint or not to paint the winch? I was thinking of matching it to the color used on the mirror arms, which is close to the grey used on the newer winches. Other option is just to clear coat it.

clear coat is what I did for all of my aluminum engine bits after a nice even bead blasting and I like the way they turned out.

First two pics are parts of the engine in my 42 when I did the head gasket last summer. The third is from the engine I originally built for my 45 but is now going into the 42 with a new H55f and lower gears in the t-case.

Great work!! Inspiring me to breathe some new life into my 42. Thanks for sharing.

Getting some parts painted up as I wait for my order of rebuild parts to show up. all new cabling as well. I'm thinking of putting an albright style solenoid in since I'm pretty sure the ones I have are 33 years old. Anyone source these in Canada?

Fantastic effort!I admire your skills and your application. Now enjoy!I bet it puts a big smile on your face, well done.

I replaced the solenoids in my old Warn with generic 24v continuous duty ones. Cost $50 bucks. Warn doesn't produce electrical parts for these old winches anymore, unfortunately. They do sell a $300+ kit that replaces all the electrical parts with new style Warn stuff.. Kit includes a new style controller too. I got this info from my local diesel cruiser place: Radd Cruisers in Duncan BC.

My plan is to get an albright style contactor and use that. I've sourced on in the US for 55$, but if I can find one in Canada, that would be better. I called Titan but they do not make a 24v one. I dont want to lose the stock look either so keeping the original controller is my preference.

Andy, do you want to clean up my 8274 when you're done yours ;) Things are still looking good at getting my 40 done for the summer.

Got some goodies today. I can now rebuild the lower end of the winch. Amazon split up the order so it may be until April before I get all the parts..... I used Amazon supply since it was the least expensive and relatively quickest.

Pics 2 and 3 are the bearings you need to rebuild the winch, in case you just want to go to a bearing shop! I got the needle bearing from warn, but the rest locally.

Managed to get the top end back together pretty easily. I pushed the shaft out int the direction is was pressed in originally since it wouldnt come out the other way. There were 4 little dimples from the original pressing showing me the way it went it the first time.

I've done a lot of life pondering while laying under the 40... I need to update my build this weekend. Lots of stuff is done just don't take time to post.

So, for those who need a parts list for rebuilding an 8274, here is mine. This is for a 1981 warn 8274

Warn 38307 - label kit
warn 2090 - terminal boot x3
warn 7953 - square nut x 4
warn 7616 - square nut x3 (7/16-14)
warn 8680 - service kit lower housing
warn 8356 - needle bearing
warn 8409 - brake service kit

The bolts I used to hold the motor on are 1/4" - 20, 61/2" long mcmaster #91247A567
The rest of the bolts and o rings I got locally. you can see the bearings I bought locally earlier in the thread.

I have spare bolts and the little o ring for the freespool handle if anyone needs some.
