Needing some help. I deleted my stock damage magnet rear lights, switching over to a oldschool fj40 rear bumper. Swapped also to LED flush lights.

The issue is that my quick research shows that the 80 series uses a funky 4 prong flasher, that seemed like more trouble to swap to a LED friendly flasher.

So, I added a resistor to the line. I added it in line before the light. Could not see any indication of what direction to wire it, so tried it both ways. It had no effect.

Any suggestions?

THanks

I know this was posted a while ago, so I'm not sure if you figured out the issue or not.

Regardless, and perhaps more for future searchers, load resistors don't have a positive or negative, so they aren't "directional". Also, they are tapped onto the wires, not necessarily in line. A t-tap onto the positive and negative wires would work just fine.

Single filament bulbs are cake as they only have two wires. Dual filament bulbs require a little more trial and error.

Thanks.

LED specific flashers are available almost all trucks. Take your unit to the local auto parts store and see what they can come up with. I have read of resistors causing fires from overheating so be careful that where you have it installed, there is a good air flow.

Good advice, yes I put the resistors in a very nicely ventilated area. Which is not hard to do in a convertible, scratch that.... roadster

I'm tackling the same issue on my '91 FJ80. I'm putting up with the rapid flash (error signal for a burned-out incandescent lamp) whilst figuring out the wiring and which metal surface on which to mount the resistors. Anyone have experience with a clean installation on their 80 series willing to offer some tips to this newb?

I found that AutoZone carries the Novita EP35 Electronic flasher, which fit and successfully eliminated the rapid flash caused by LED lamps in the turn signals. $15 and change after tax here in Phoenix, and a 5 minute swap.
