So I recently started having a steering issue, unlike any issue I've had before. It only happens in incredibly low speeds (5 mph or lower), basically when I am pulling in/out of a parking space or turning into the driveway. My steering wheel will skip and jerk. It does this when I am stationary as well. However, if I'm stationary or in park and I put my foot on the brake, give it a slight acceleration, and turn the wheel, it doesn't do it anymore. I have a video on my phone that I can't upload.

My shop said my steering box and power steering pump are fine (I just had it serviced and all hoses replaced, thinking this would mitigate the issue). My shop foreman and shop manager, both Toyota Master Mechanics, also checked the T-Case VC and said that it was fine, too. The only thing we can think of is that it may be the crankshaft pulley bolt. This bolt has crazy torque specs, like up to 350 ft lbs. or something crazy like that, and may be tight but not fully torqued, and that's causing this weird slipping/jerking to the steering wheel.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Cheers

What year?

To place a video, dump it on YouTube then post a link. Make sure it's not private.

What you're describing also sounds like your CDL is locked or your viscous coupling has failed in the locked position.

Do you have locking differentials?

When turning on pavement, do your tires chirp?

It's a 97'. I only have the locking center diff. and no chirping from the tires. the center diff VC seems to be fine but I'll definitely have it looked at again.

It can be loose wheel bearings, worn and cupped tires, a worn steering gear, worn drag link ends, plus many more.

See if you can post your video link and we can all look at that.

That surely adds to my running list of possible issues to look at. The tires are only a year old and may only have 500 miles on them.

I have the video on my personal laptop, and I am out of town for work, so it'll be later this week before I can get it posted to this thread. Thanks for the tip on the video upload. I'm still relatively new to being a Land Cruiser owner, so all the help is much appreciated.

If the truck has been sitting a lot it's possible it'd flat spots in the tires too.

So many possibilities.
We'll work through them starting with easiest and cheapest.

Has the fluid strainer inside the reservoir ever been removed and cleaned? There is possibly a low rpm flow issue. I mention this because you stated that once engine rpm’s were increased the problem went away.

Not since I have owned the vehicle. Is that a pretty easy job?

Taking the reservoir apart is easy. Getting the lid back on so that it’s sealed up is another thing. It’s possible, many have done it including myself. It’s easier to just buy a new reservoir but if you are into adventure then go for it.

This is the first thing that came to my mind
