80 Series High Roof (or High Top) Idea

If I could own (2) 80 series trucks I would convert one to that Innovation camper style shown above. That is pretty sweet. Diesel powered as well.

To take it even a step further why not incorporate some slide out sides like RVs that would be actuated by either a hydraulic ram, electronic motor, or air pressurized ram from an onboard compressor.

I like the solar panels on the rooftop idea. Those could be used to power the inflatable hot tub so that bubbles come out the jets and then have a heat exchanger plumbed into the engine cooling system to heat up the water. Bring some of the "Perfect 10" models along too. :grinpimp:

I read a little German and man, those prices are over the (roof) top. One can find a decent second hand rugged, "tropicalized" HDJ 81 or HZJ 105 in Yurp for 30,000 euros ($45,000), but the equipment shown above would at least triple that. Would you be ready to risk such a rig on an African trail? Skilled DIYers can do less sleek, but as handy.

Following Corbet's experience:

This is identical to the 78 Series camper we rented while in Oz.

1. Both of us slept just fine on the top bunk but we are a bit smaller (5'10 180lbs, 5'2" 105lbs). But yeah, some might find it like sleeping in a coffin.

2. The camper did not feel very top heavy but I have never driven a non-camper 78 series. It was not lifted either and ran on 31" or smaller tires.

3. We used the kitchen 1-2 times per day. The stove had a little broiler below which I used toast bread and such. Yes, it is cramped but not if just one person is doing the cooking.

I would love to reproduce this camper on an 80/100 in the States. I would just copy the layout here. It worked perfectly and can sleep 3 with the convertible bed below. There was ample food and clothing storage for two adults.

I could be wrong but I think the 78 Series Troopie has more headroom in the rear than an 80. It was fine to even sit back there on the bench with the camper down. That bench is about 10" off the floorboard. What I'm saying is the pop-top portion on an 80 would have to be taller to get the same interior height.

I like this

Where is this pic taken? Place looks awesome.

I like the pop-top options but I wouldn't be tryin it as my metal fab skillz are pretty weak. I'd personally vote for a small utility trailer and throw a roof-top tent on top of it. That way your 80 doesn't have to always be your camper.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't that the tropic of capricorn marker North of Alice Springs? I've been there, you can get some serious alone time out that way. Nice pics by the way!

Or you could just go all out and cut out the whole back of the 80 and start over....

I saw one of these on a BC Ferry once. Nice old German couple touring the world in it. It was a pretty impressive rig. No camera on me that day though

Yep.

The "resort" we stayed at north-east of there turned its power off at night. Hot water was accomplished via a wood fire.

good thread!
do any of the roof tents fit on short wheel bases? or would they be too long? cheers!

Fred-- Maggiolina makes a small RTT, i think thats what MUDRAK has on his 45

Would ki...love :) to know size and make of those tires!
They look like michelins

I am starting to realize that we are all driving stealthy RV's.

Hot water, built in beds, when is someone gonna put a toilet in there 80?

dang--that first pic is UGLY! Plus, I can imagine you'd forget about it just once and drive into a low garage. Adios roof! The pop ups, however, would be fun and work well.

If you have any pics, please post them up!!!
