Take the front shaft off and see if the clunk goes away. If you really want to get under it while it’s running, maybe a better idea would be to get it up on all 4 corners with jack stands to make sure it can’t roll. Then peak under there, or have you son peak under there, or get a camera mounted and video it

Good idea, but keep in mind that, unlike say a bearing whine, if the problem goes away, you haven't learned anything; you just eliminated all the AWD slop.

On the other hand, if the problem persists with one DS off, then the problem resides in the half of the drivetrain with the DS still installed.

Oh I thought it might pinpoint the problem in the front. I’ll go back to the 60 forum now...

Bump

Any issues found with the clunk?

I've changed my u-joints and all three engine mounts. if it's normal I won't worry about it I just want to make sure that I don't lose my transfer case or viscous coupler on a trip with the family.

Thanks MUD :flipoff2:

I've had this same issues since I purchased the vehicle two years ago. Clunk when I shift from P to R, and R to D and vice versa. More noticable when I first start the vehicle. Taken it to several shops, no luck on eliminating the luck. Drive line is good, u joints good, mounting and bushings good. Toyota tech summed it up as typical "slop" in driveline for older vehicle. As mentioned above, just embracing the clunk and moving on to other upgrades/maintenance.

I've had (maybe) the same clunk the entire 10 years I've owned mine. I'm due to replace my rear control arms, but that's more of one of the several clunks when I go over bumps. You know? "Oh, that's a normal clunk/rattle", vs "Wait - that's a new one!"

We almost need a bumper sticker made "embrace the clunk"

Any any lift or modification in steering/suspension/etc. produces more avenues for driveline clunking because angles of things change, and you *need* play/slop.

Also things wear. Any sliding/rotating/meshing parts get worn and they move around more.

Every single comment is helpful I have the same problem I’m new on fj80 world and I feel concern about it ! Now is better wait if something bad comes Lol thank you guys
