Hey all,

I've read some threads about people converting their front cig lighter to USB and other stuff, but my rig is MISSING the entire everything including the housing. Do I need to pull the dash to fish out the specific wiring for it when I go to attach a newer one? The PO also F**ked up the radio and its loose back there so I imagine I need to pull the dash bezel and get into all of that back there.

I will probably do a USB charger mod on that space, but just wondering the best way to get to the wiring back there.

cheers,

Joel

I’d pull the dash to tighten down the radio and find the cig lighter wires. I used the factory wires for my replacement plug. I think I had to extend them slightly to make things easier to put back together.

blue sea 1011 socket in place of the cig lighter. https://www.bluesea.com/products/1011/12_Volt_Dash_Socket
Then Inserted a little dual usb plug to charge my phone. I don’t use either very much anymore because I have a data cable running from my radio to phone mount.

I'm thinking about changing up my power situation to my Dometic Fridge and may move to a power station instead of my National Luna setup. In that case I would keep the Cigarette style input so I could constantly keep the power station charged....

thanks for the link and advice, @ERG80 !

BTW, where in Nashville are you? We have a good group developing in this area!

You’re welcome.

I’m in Cookeville.

what about something like that, should work, right? I need to look at the 80 wires, prob just positive/negative?

Yes it would work. It should fit in the factory cigarette lighter hole, minus the rectangular bezel.

Yes, just positive & negative to hook up.

FWIW if you're charging stuff, something like this is a good option below
Power Delivery for fast charging.
I just put this one in the work truck, and its well made and works well. Could do without the volts indicator being so bright though

That looks a lot like the blue sea so it should work. I had to slightly enlarge the dash’s socket hole a little so it would fit. You’ll probably have to do it for that one too.

Two wires. You may want to upgrade wires and run them to the battery depending on what you’re planning to run from there.

Cool, those are nice. What "other" wiring can be tapped into to create a second powered socket like this, that can be put either on the dash or somewhere else up front? I'm sure this subject is played to death, so sorry for the multiple questions.

The traditional cigarette sockets aren't rated for a lot of current.

If you want to run a fridge in the back, it's safer to run a dedicated circuit with fuse to the back of the truck.

The charger I posted draws less than 10amps, so would be safe connected to the OEM cigarette lighter circuit

Thinking about moving to a Jackery type unit that powers my fridge. I would use the cigarette socket to keep the Jackery type unit recharged. Unless it's better to run a wire straight from battery to Jackery....?

I have the OE cig lighter up front and ran 4 AWG to the rear for my fridge and other accessories. I included a cig lighter at the rear and while it is rarely used, I ran across these in HF the other day.

if you're looking to keep your fridge powered or charge up your power station, I wouldn't do the cigarette plug... I'd use the Andersen plugs. much less prone to vibration and can handle up to 30 amps (for other applications) I really like Power Werx stuff. you can get most stuff on Amazon, but some you have to go to their siteAnderson Powerpole, DC Power, Wire & Cable, Two-Way Radios | Powerwerx - https://powerwerx.com/
I'd replace your cig if you're gonna do it, with something that does usb power that way you don't have to have a adapter...

Personally I cut off all my cig plugs and fasten on some Andersen plugs. much more reliable IMO.

I posted this in another thread... but I'll throw it here.

I cut off my plug on my fridge and my portable power station and put one of these on each end
30 Amp Anderson plug Note you will need the anderson plug crimping tool...

or you can get this Anderson plug pigtailand splice on...

Then put one of these with a wire to my battery Anderson outlet

Note there is no low voltage cutoff unless your system has it built in.... (my fridge does but my power station does not... learned the hard way)
so you may want to wire in this Low Voltage Cutoff Switch (my plan for this summer)

Great thanks for all of the replies, guys! I found my cigarette lighter wiring, and will do a USB style connection for that front dash area, and run a wire back from the battery to be in place to recharge my power station on a trip.

These are some good links!

Make sure to do some research on cable size, and use a fuse at the power source.
