I discovered in town today a 1965 FJ 40. And I fell in love with it. So I think I might be selling my 1994 FZJ 80 and buying the 40. Because it's for sale. It would be my daily driver, fret not though, my pizza delivering days have given their 2 weeks notice.

I've another job lined up, one that won't require me driving for it.

I've got about 192k miles on the '94. In order to have enough money for a complete tuneup on the 40, I would need to sell it for about 7000 dollars.

Is that a reasonable price for it, or should I be asking lower? The paint is in okay condition, it looks like someone keyed it in one place, but it was like that before I got it. There's some oxidation on the roof, about the size of an orange. I'm going to try to get insurance to replace my windshield since it got raped by a rock. I've replaced the stock speakers with Pioneers, so it sounds excellent. It runs like mad, and doesn't shift weird or leak any fluids. I've got about a 2 inch stack of maintenance records.

And for cruiserheads, I've got a Slee transfercase skid plate.

And a ghetto-rigged XM radio.

Does 7000 sound out of the question? It's given me basically zero problems since I bought it in December.

Do you want to buy it? ;)

Lemme know what ya'll think. Mudrak said it could be a daily driver.

And tell me if you want to buy my 80.

40-s full of charms and looks attractive, I guess as almost any car older then certain point. I would not mind to have one by myself and spend some time to restore it. But would I like to have it as daily car? No freaking way! Just my opinion.

It'll sort of be my project car. I know I'll probably be walking to work for a few weeks at a time, but I'd like to restore/awesomeize it and keep it around for several years.

Meh,

You'll be kicking yourself the first time you get vapor lock and you are sitting on the side of the road on a 100+ day.

"I could have been cruising along in my leather seats with the AC on, tunes cranked, at 80 mph instead of sitting hear getting grease all over my good shirt trying to make this thing run."

I DD'd a pig for a bit......

93-95s with that many miles are going from $3200-$6000 here in AZ all the time. I'd think you'll have trouble getting $7k for it.

As for using a 40 for a DD, never. Not with leaf springs, no power steering, no AC, and no power nothin.

Maybe if the fj40 was a '79-'83 with P.S., but a 1965 is going to be tough.

I'd think long and hard before i sold a reliable vehicle only to put myself in a position where a '65 was my only means of transportation.

If you're dead set on it, fine, but atleast save an extra grand or so and by a small honda. It will be well worth it.

Keep the one you've got and save up to get the "Toy 40". A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

You'll regret getting rid of the 80. Pick up a cheap 40 later to build and play with when you get the good money coming in.

I have been using my 40 as a daily driver for the last three months. I love driving the truck, as I walk up to it I get excited to drive it. Sure all the doors squeek. No biggie. It is also a four speed, with no power steering and a heater than jut won't turn off, but it is a 40 and it is worht it. Every time I go wheeling I am amazed at what a thrity year old truck can simply crawl over.

Plus like Onur says, "chicks dig forties!"

If you can't afford both get the 40. You will be able to find 80's cheap in the future, but a decent 40 will only get more expensive.

Exactly what I was thinking. However I would still trade my 80 for a HJ45:D

Your plan is not sound, Grasshopper.:D

Are we men or are we interior decorators!:flipoff2:

I just went from a nicely built 93 to a 67 FJ40....and I LOVE it!

It's my daily driver (although I only go 10 miles a day) If it's a bone stock 65, then you will need to seriously upgrade somethings the make life a little easier.

I think the 80's are awesome, still own one for my wife...but for me I love the 40. The ride on my 40 is actually pretty damn smooth. The 40 is "THE" land cruiser, even tho you'll have to deal with people saying "nice jeep" all the time

Save a 40, numbers are dwindling.

I thought you bought a Camo 45....

I went the other way

I went from a mint 1978 40 with power steering and smooth running engine to an lx450 and haven't regretted it whatsoever. I can't even fathom having a 40 for a DD anymore. You will miss the basic creatur comforts like A/C, powersteering, the ability to pass other cars, 4 doors, etc. 40s are great but not if you don't have another vehicle to drive while you have to wrench on it. I will get another in the future but would never give up the lx450. That being said it comes down to how much on road driving you will do. I concur with the others don't buy it unless you can afford it as a second vehicle.

keep the 80, but the 40 anyway....get a better job with no commute and use the money to pay for the 40.

The problem is not that you have the wrong key, but that you're trying the wrong hole! :)

I'd have to go along with everyone else. I wouldn't use the 40 for DD. Besides, if you get a honda, think of all the money you'll save on gas. Then you can use it to get an 80 later.

I have to say I agree with the general consensus here - an '80 is a better DD than a 40, but owning both I also see the attatraction to the 40 as a DD.

It looks like two things could work in favor of the '40 here...
- Sonoma Ca., you could have the top off most of the year, yah, very cool and my wife (the only 'chick' in my life) digs the 40!
- It doesn't sound like too much of a commute if one of the options open is to walk to work when the 40 is down for repair/resto.

I sometimes use my 40 for a DD, it's more fun in the summer than winter, but even when I was restoring it, I always planned a backup so I didn't have to walk to work. I only have a 6 mile commute and walking IS NOT an option at this point.

Keep the 80, buy the 40 (or save up for when you can) and keep them all alive and well.

Dan.

Used my 40 for a daily driver for a couple years. Parked it when I bought the 80. The 40 was (and still is) in need of some maintenance. Just don't have the time right now to mess with it. I really miss driving the 40 even though the 80 is more comfortable. The 40 is rusty and will need a lot of work to get it looking good again, but it still turns way more heads than the 80 in great condition. I sometimes think about selling the 80 and using the money to restore the 40 but I hesitate to do that because my wife can't drive a stick. One more point I just thought of in this pointless rant... the 40 gets better gas mileage than the 80 does.

Wash wax, ( 3 step wax) and clean the carpet in the 80. It will be like driving something newer...
