Weekly checklist!That’s “big medicine“ brother...
Not to derail, but curious on your thoughts between second and first focal plane optics. I know all the pros and cons of both, just curious on your opinion. Parameters: as close as 100 yards but routinely 500-800 and as far as 1000. Hunting.Habitual, mundane and necessary plumbing...
When I scoured the way back machine, I found the post where I thought Blue silicone plumbing was going to be the next best thing to 3:70 gears. I was redoing the engine bay plumbing today, when my good friend and spiritual advisor, B-ray showed up at the homestead with a cold snack and an issue with an optic. Not being one to leave a trusted companion and hunting cohort in a 2nd focal plane dilemma, I shifted gears.
Old Blue.....It’s not just a dog, it’s silicone.

No maneuvering at all. All my current setups are SFP but I’m looking for new glad for my .300 wm this is strictly a bear hunting rifle (I bow hunt for elk and deer). I’m looking at a FFP MOA and I guess just looking for someone to confirm my own decision. Rifle currently has a Nikon Monarch SFP(can’t remember mag; 16x?). I’ve taken bear at 800 yards but want better optics and zoom for those distances. I am by no means a long range shooter or anything, just want a clearer picture on those chances I’ve got a big ol forest pig way out there munching some berries on a steep alpine meadow.please derail..!
FFP in MOA, that’s my girl. Although, my go to rig(s) for eastern whitetail, <300-400 in 2FP. I’m hanging it out for everyone to have swing at here but, it’s like everything else, it’s a tool of choice. A lot of my close friends shoot FFP in MILRAD. I get it. I just cut my teeth on FFP in MOA and sometimes you have dance with what I brung (it’s a real word). I have, and do hunt, “eastern distances”. IE way different than big sky country. My last 5 whitetails have been <150m. New powders, projectiles and optics have pushed the limits of ethical hunting distances, way passed what was acceptable 30-20-10yrs ago.
I run a couple different optics 2FP on a 6.5, 308, 7mm-08, 30-06, and I shoot FFP on the same calibers up to and including 338LM. I think, IMHO, it depends on what you want to carry in your “tool box”....
There is an old joke that goes something like this...”Nobody shoots more than 400yds, unless it has a really big rack”..
did I just maneuver all around your question?
