ok im undoing some previous owner mods of a painless wiring harness. i have installed a factory 73 dash harness and need to know where these connectors go. Photo #1.. three wires at the coil and (one white connector pictured im pretty sure this is 12v source if anyone can confirm) left with three wires for the coil im assuming + and - but where does the third go?

photo 2 have three wires at starter im thinking some of these go on starter and some go on dist.

finally loaded some pics. ok so basically i have the white connector which im pretty sure is 12 hot.
photo one has three other wires i know this is coil hook up but why three instead of two and which is which?

photo two has three wires im assuming this goes to the starter, dist, and possibly coolant temp? im guessing coolant temp bc i have yet to plug it up but i cant seem to even find it on the engine.

the previous owner had a aftermarket relay of sorts powering the starter i will post a pic of this but im assuming i can do away with it?

I've got a 73 and it had an additional wire to the coil that turned out to be for an aftermarket tach. Might also be a ballast jumper for the coil.

You are correct on your assumptions of the wires. The large white plug is the main power feed for the whole vehicle off the positve battery terminal. There would have been a peice of fusible link wire between that plug and battery terminal. Stock battery cable would have been a large wire and lug to starter with a small wire coming over to that plug.

The three wires with the open loop ends do go to the coil and ballast resistor. Not sure what distributor you have. NAPA has a nice ballast resistor that looks very stock and bolts right on, ask for it by your year and model as I recall.

The other wires do go to the starter and one to the distributor I think. The selenoid that has been added is strange. The factory starter does the selenoid funtions internally.

The extra wire is a ballast bypass for cold starting, it takes direct 12V from one of the starter terminals back to the coil for a hotter spark only when cranking the starter. It is not required, I went to a newer gear reduction starter and electronic mallory distributor and have not missied it.

Can't ID the colors off the top of my head, the Haynes repair manual does have a good wiring diagram in it. I use the one for 1972, as it is closer to my rig than the 73, 74 diagram, but the ignition curcuits are the same I believe.

i'll go pick up a haynes manual and check it. i have the coil that came from my 73 harness and it has some thing on top of it which now im believing to be the ballast resistor I assumed this was an aftermarket part because it has some crimped jumper wire on it that i know isnt oem. but i'll be honest and say that im not sure of its function and the coil on the truck currently just has the positive and neg wires running it.

Im also kind of confused that my starter currently has three wires running off of it. i am used to two.....maybe its an aftermarket job as well.

side note: just for some insight about this truck the previous owner installed a motorcraft carb on it :(

sorry it took awhile, but it's cold out and and I've had a hectic schedule. Fortunately tonight included some rum and fortitude. I'm not sure exactly what wiring you're looking for, but I'd be happy to run down wires to help you work it out. Can't tell wire colors from the pics, but I can check out what you need. Again, the rig is stock, with the exception of a Trollhole carb and dizzy, and the ballast resistor is from a 68 plymouth. As far as the ballast is concerned, it was a $2 vs. $25 decision, Mopar vs. Toyota. Same specs.

ok an update and need some more help.
Pretty sure i have all the plugs wired up where they need to go but for some reason my coil never gets the power from the ignition switch. Im kind of under the impression i may have a wire burned up somewhere or possibly have a bad ignition switch. fuse block has power across all terminals. any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my '76. Pull the entire fuse block off and check out all the terminals on the back. Pull each apart and clean them up with some emery cloth (steel wool, etc) and contact cleaner. The terminals on the back of my fuse holder didn't even look that bad but once they were cleaned up my wiring problem went away. You may want to pull each fuse out as well and clean them. In my case, I learned the long way that just because they look ok doesn't mean the circuit is actually conducting well......good luck!

starter solenoid?

that looks like an Americun starter solenoid to me. My '76 doesn't have that and I don't think earlier models had one either. I could be mistaken - someone else chime in if I am. If the early models don't have a starter solenoid as I suspect, chunk that thing and hook up the starter as per wiring diagram - and be sure to get your fusible link installed

ok finally some figured a few things out......checked the ignition switch and it tests good. as far as the starter solenoid, i figured out why the p.o. did that. i wired it up like its suppose to be and when i went to start it cranked over but when the key is turned to "on" from start it continues to crank over :( apparantely the factory solenoid is bad so instead of replacing the just added one to the circuit. not a bad idea just kind of a hack job repair. anyway back to the coil not recieving power. i ran a straight wire from the battery to the positive on the coil (without disconnecting the black/yellow) just to pull the truck out of the shop and as soon as i did that noticed something smoking on the driver side harness. sooo after further inspection i found that the black yellow from the voltage regulator is melted. Not sure why and not sure how far it had melted i proceeded to uravel the harness and found that it had melted all the way up to a factory splice connection to three other black yellow wires. im kind of thinking i may have a problem with the voltage regulator now so i just ordered a new one.

Roma, I know this is an OLD thread, but i have the same 3 wires at coil and 3 at the starter issue...hod did you hook them up in the coil- igniter- ballast relationship?? Please enlighten me!
thanks for your time.
