Well I may have to move my build thread over here because I have not had any responses in the 40/55 since i decided this, although it is kinda crazy. I guess they didn't take to well of the thought...

Anyways, I have a 7.3 diesel in a wrecked f250 with a six speed manual tranny. I am just going to use the transfer case out of the f250. I know the 7.3 weighs around 110 pounds dressed but I am planning switching to Dana 60s in the front and rear. I am going to have to lift the body for clearance and find a way to cool the monstrosity of an engine. I know this all sounds crazy but I am gonna make it work. The batteries are going to have to relocated to inside the cab somewhere. Let me hear all of your comments good or bad. I know a chevy 6.2 would be a "wiser choice" but I think the 6.2 does not even make a good 800 pound anchor. We have had to many problems out of them in the past.

I say giver! Like I said in your thread in the 40 section my dad has that engine and it pulls hard! I can't wait to watch this take shape

Howdy! This could be a killer rig if you can get it all together. But, I would spend a lot of time with a tape measure making sure it will fit before getting wrench happy. Besides the extra weight, the engine, including all the extras, is a lot bigger than a chevy small block. After making it fit in the engine bay, you still need to figure out how to get the steering to fit around the engine, and where will you put the intercooler at? The 6 speed tranny would be great, but it is fat and long, so the tranny tunnel will be way too small, and by the time you add a transfer case, there won't be much room for a rear driveshaft. I could really get my head into a conversion like this, but I would want to put a lot of time into laying it out on graph paper to make sure it will all fit. Good Luck. John

shouldn't be any bigger than a big block gas engine right? is this for a trail rig or street/trail?

Rear Steer?

There is a Fj40 in Stockton that had a mopar 440 BB stuffed between the frame rails so width should not be the issue. Length is going to be the limiting factor.

kinda wanting a mixture of the two??

I have a 2001 F250 with the 7.3 reprogrammed with modified intake and exhaust. Once I get the engine seasoned, another couple hundred thousand miles, I would love to drop it in my 40. Please keep us posted on your progress and good luck.
Cheers,
Dave

I'm in AL too (Cullman) be cool to see this. Assume you plan to go with 1ton axle assemblies at the same time?

Yea am planning on going with one ton axles.

back half it, tube it out, and stretch it out and the drivetrain length shouldn't be any problem whatsoever :grinpimp:

you are for sure going to have to rebuild the front part of the frame at least twice as strong to hold that much weight imo

Nice nice .. you would be about 400 punds over the usal 40 engine weght .. but hey who cares !

It's a NA IDI .. ? I've seen those engines with a ATS turbo doing great in powa .. you will need to move your rear axle a bit probably ..

keep us posted !

What kind of 7.3? There were many.. the old iDi, then the early powerstroke, then the later powerstroke.

personally, I wouldn't use any of them because being around a diesel on the trail just sucks for everyone, and such a limited powerband to work with is no fun.. (basically 2000rpm)

But to each his own..

On a powerstroke it's basically off idle to 3500

maybe not the best in mud, but everywhere else I think it would be better, plus no need for a super low crawl ratio.

for slow going the diesel would be fine. if you plan on doing alot of mud just mod it to rev highter and run lower numberical gear (3.73s or something comparable) for wheelspin.

putting that kind of stress on a 40 year old frame wont be good .shorten up a diesel 4x4 and drive that ,when your done thats what your gonna end up with except with a toyota body.
