I like the idea. How are you going to get the intercooler in there as well as the radiator? Steering could be an issue but a scout or FJ 60 box can help with some of the clearance problems. Maybe stretching the frame and tub behind the doors and in front of the rear wheel wells can solve some of the driveline length and angle issues you will run into. There is a guy on the marlin crawler forum that did something similar to a Willis. But he went with a 1KZ. However some of his body ideas could be used to your advantage. The build thread is called willymamouth. Not sure on spelling though.

putting that kind of stress on a 40 year old frame wont be good .shorten up a diesel 4x4 and drive that ,when your done thats what your gonna end up with except with a toyota body.

Exactly what came to my mind

find a 94-96 single cab short bed with a 7.3. Dana 60 front already, throw an 70 or 80 in the rear, Or keep the 10.25, they are actually sweet axles.

So what's the scoop with this. Are you doing it or not? Sure he can swap frames or even just drive a ford but thats not why we do this. We love our 40's and sometimes we like to be creative.

shelfboy1: Crawling and hardcore stuff is what you do. I do not so my advice isn't as worthy as yours. I would have thought that a 40 frame could take it if it was fully boxed and maybe more and better bracing. Much like making you frame like this http://www.aqualu.com/4230 template master copy.jpg without the 4500$ price tag. But then again because I am talking out of my ass maybe you could just modify the ford frame enough to take the 40 body and keep the drivetrain. It would be a lot of work and not sure if it cold be done. My dads 350 reg cab long box is a lot longer than my 40.

A continuation of things coming out of my ass: What if you took that ford frame and put a bobbed 40 on and made a tray back on it so you had a homemade FJ45 on a ford frame?

I totally understand, and it would be sick, if the time and more than average money was there, I was just sayin.. I've always dreamed about a 500+ HP turbo diesel in a 40 body with F and R Floaters or better yet, portals, or portal bolt ons, agggh .... But I have a 600 hp diesel, built axles, just a little big for tight trails, I love the thing, sold my 80, and can pull a horse trailer, just preference.

If it's the powerstroke 7.3 it will be too tall to work, have a bunch of experience with these motors and they are tall and heavy more than anything, not to be the downer ney sayer, but a isuzu NPR 4 banger diesel or a 4BT would be way easier to deal with. Stuffing a 90's up 7.3 in a 40 reminds me of Chris Farley's "fat guy in a little coat" skit. If you do it i'd like to see it though.
