Anybody have a decent shot of the underside of an LWB pickup? I'm guessing the LV routing would be similar too. One of my upcoming tasks is to get an exhaust system put on the 66', I'd like to have a handful of pictures to show my exhaust guy in an attempt to get it as close to stock as possible. Any suggested muffler part numbers would be great too :D

And if the 'stock' picture showed the exhaust routing UNDER the skidplate, would that influence your decision as to 'how' stock to make it? Chances are, it does [and it would]

A good exhaust guy should be like an artist, just needing a little guidance from you. I had my guy cut the stock pipe about a foot below the collector and run from there. Ran the pipe at mid frame to a point under the bed, used a turbo muffler with offset in and center out do to a clean rise in the exhaust, and route the crossover like a 40 at the back axle to make sure I'd have room for an aux tank.

IMO, that's the way to go.;)

I've got a really good exhaust guy that does an excellent job for me... he's done some nice tight exhausts on 40's in the past. I just don't want to have it differ too much from the stock routing, as of right now its dumping right on top of the rear axle. I'm assuming it ran straight down the drivers side, inside of the frame, had the muffler just past the cab and then up and over the axle and dumped out the right behind the driver rear tire?

This rig will never get an aux. tank, or really wheeled at that. While I'm not looking to do a 100% class A resto, I am looking to keep it 95% vintage, clean, nothing irreversible... a "Relic-Resto" I call it. Something that I could do a full-strip resto in the future when I've got $20k to spare :D

I know one thing that will help decide about running your exhaust above the skid plate and that's if you find the PTO you are looking for. Plenty of room above the skid plate with no PTO unit. Things get a little tight once you install a PTO. I've got a PTO unit laying around in my garage that was a lttle too close to the exhaust pipe. It's got a nice little melted spot on the case.

An excellent.....and overlooked point!

Kurt SOR's online catalog has a diagram of the 63-67 FJ45 exhaust. Looks like you could use a stock FJ40 header pipe and add a little length to where the muffler clamps to the frame. Then just a custom tailpipe. Over the axle then outside the frame just behind the axle with one hanger.

Thanks for the replies guys... I'm glad you brought up the PTO, I was going to get the exhaust done pretty soon here and I would be very wise to wait until the PTO is in place :D

I'll have to check out the SOR diagram

Look closely at that diagram if you do so, Kurt. I am pretty sure it's for a SWB FJ45 PU, not LWB, IIRC.

Although it probably doesn't matter a whole lot....

You may have already seen this, but here is the routing from my 1964 LPB parts book.

Probably have the same book as yours JP. Doesn't it seem strange they would end the pipe short of the back of the bed and what looks like in line with the tail lights? my 45 has one of those Confer style rear bumpers. I need to pull it off some time and see if I can see where the stock license plate bracket would mount. If on the left side like I think it is. that would be in the way as well. Really need to take a look at my tail light housing to see which side have the license plate light lens cut out. Housings are removed and everything is out of town.

Kurt, here is a picture of my 65 LPB before we disassembled her. It does look like it follows the picture that JP posted. I also had the confer bumper and when we took it off, here is the way she looked. I have an idea that this was factory but not completely sure. I know the muffler was in the same configuration as the photo posted by JP.

Kurt, I am sorry I don't have any underbelly photos. I "can" say for sure that the exhaust did run above the skid plate.

Bringing this one back from the dead :D

I never did get the exhaust system re-worked, it's still been blowing back at the rear axle. I want to resolve that and I think the pics here will be enough to show my exhaust guy for a clean install. However, I'd like to find a near stock muffler. I have an OEM option in stock (40 Series but really similar as I recall) but I figured I'd ask if anyone has seen a good aftermarket muffler for the stock 1-3/4"? pipe.
