62 cup holders on 60 console

I finally got through the holiday season (and the post gift card season) and things have slowed back down to normal. I'm getting close to my slow season when I resume R&D on new products. I have stuff lined up for the 40 series, Tacoma, Tundra, 4th Gen 4Runner, and a few others. I want to make my final list of this years projects soon so I can set up a timeline and I have question for you guys. Is there interest in a rear double cup holder for the 60 and 62? Can I see some pics from the back seat looking at the backside of their two consoles? I want to get an idea on the space and surface I would have to work with. For visual reference here are the 80 series and 3rd gen 4Runner rear doubles. It would be something along these lines.

I am interested in a rear cup holder for the 62!

This rear panel has a slight curve to it although it appears flat. I thought about putting your front 2 cup holder back there.
Of course it didn't work because of the angles and that the rear of the console is not flat. :-) Oh yeah I'd be in!!

Thanks for the pics. Is that the 62 console? The 60 console from the back is almost identical. I'm pretty sure I can make one rear double that will work for both. They both have a large flat surface on the back to work with. What is the angle of the slope on the back. The 60 console I have slopes about 12 degrees off from true vertical. If both consoles have close to the same slope on the back then this should be an easy project.

Yes, 62 console with a 60 hinge for the lid. The surface is not flat (like the earth LOL, sorry I couldn't help myself!) from left to right it is curved,
slightly not sure about the top to bottom. I will try and take a pic that might help, but I have no way of getting all enginerney about it.

Just finished my lunch break and decided to come up with a quick idea while I was just sitting here stuffing my face. Here's a few CAD snap shots of my idea. I kept it clean and simple. There is a slight curvature on the back with a 12 degree angle. This should be pretty close to fitting. I will get a prototype made during the night and test fit tomorrow.

Could I get the dimensions for the 3 questions in the pic below? I would like to see how that compares to the flatish spot on the 60 console.

Also, can someone tell me the gap between the center console and the rear seats when they are folded down (assuming they do fold down and forward like the 80 and not just into the floor) for both the 60 and 62? Right now the design will stick out 4". I can add a cell phone slot or something else but want to make sure the space is there.

LOL, putting me to work! Here ya go. I used a better (straighter pic) and did my best to measure corner to corner as I have drawn the box.

Thanks for those pics. Looks like the 62 console is almost 2" more narrow. That is going to complicate a "universal" fit for both. Also looks like there is not enough depth for the cup holder to have a phone slot out in front. I will have to keep the design under 4" in depth.

That's because you have the earlier 60 center console, the later 60 and 62 console is different. I believe you can swap the whole unit, a nice upgrade as you gain about 3-4" of vertical storage, perfect size for a very specific object.
I have a late model 60 console In my 62 and it seems identical. The early 60 console is different though you're right.

Yes, the 85-87 FJ60 consoles are the same as the FJ62 consoles for the US market. I’ll edit my post for a hair more clarity.

What is the year range for the earlier style FJ60 console? That is the one that is wider in the back. I did make some changes to the design to hopefully still allow it to work on both consoles. It will work ONLY if both consoles have the same slope angle on the back. Prototype 1.0 is printing now. I will be able to test fit tomorrow and figure out where changes are needed. Since the back side is simple in geometry, this should be a quick process in perfecting fitment.

I don’t know the exact month change but I believe it follows the correlation of the transmission/driveshaft changes of from 81-84 and 85-87.

Prototype 1.0 fit pretty good but not perfect. I made some changes to fitment. I think version 2.0 will fit on both consoles. I will start the print today and have it ready for test fitting tomorrow. I will post some pics once I have a version that fits really nice.

So I printed a full width cup holder for the older 60 console and a more narrow cup holder for the later 60 and 62 console. I did everything I could to get the more narrow cup holder for the late 60/62 to fit (and look correct) on the early 60 console. It actually fit perfectly. I just need to make sure this more narrow cup holder that DOES fit on the early 60 console will ALSO fit on the later 60 and 62 console. I need a volunteer. Anyone with a 62 console willing to let me ship them a prototype and then take lots of pics and send them to me? I will need to see how it fits on that console. I may have to make changes and send 1-2 more prototypes with more pics until we get it perfect. I will post pics of the last 2 prototypes tomorrow once I have time to smooth them out and get some paint on them.

I'm hopeful to find someone in Socal or at least the Western US to help with feedback on prototype fitment. It takes a lot longer if I have to ship a prototype to the East coast every time I need feedback on test fitting.
