Hey everyone, I have a 61 FJ40 I am trying to get familiar with.:hhmm: On the dash there are a few knobs and switches I am not sure what they go to or if they belong at all. I will try to post some pics in the next day or so. If someone has pics or diagrams of their FJ that would be very helpful.

At some point I will try to start another thread with all my questions. I am trying to get this FJ as original as possible. Thanks for your help!:D

Post up your picture I would probably be able to help you out. I have a couple of 61s and a 62 which should be the same. 63 added a ashtray, not sure if that changed anything but I doubt it..

I think the dash is the same as the 62. I just closed all my non stock holes, I think I did it correctly. See picture below
1 and 3 turn signal lights
2 Ignition switch
4 Cigarette lighter (notched hole so I know it is factory)
5 light switch
6 Choke
7 Hand Throttle
8 4WD indicator light
Just below 8 is 4wd pull knob
9 Wiper Switch
10 Hole for High Low shifter rod, and two holes below are for the handle
11 two holes above dash for the grab handle.

The grab handle holes, High Low Shifter handle holes, and the 4wd pull knob holes are the only ones that are hole you could have made with a drill, ALL the rest are either not round (Flat spot) or have notches in them and clearly had to be done at the factory.

Hope this helps. I had 5 extra small holes I welded closed just the other day, and a huge odd shape hole for two gauges I guess I welded metal behind just to the left of the cluster, has one coat of bondo just to smooth out. If my dsh is not back to factory holes, please someone also let me know.

Looking at what cjgoode posted I must be missing my cigarette lighter. Anyone have an extra one laying around.:) My idle knob is broken too:frown:

I don't think there were cig lighters at that time

This is a little bit later, but has the lighter and ashtray, my 62 only has the cigarette lighter, hole, and I have the original lighter that goes in it. Not sure if they all had it or not. That hole is round with a notch cut out so I know it was not drilled by a PO.

I always thought that this was the location for a cabin light switch...

pretty sure cigarette lighters did not start until '63 when they added the ash tray.... all three of my '62s did not have one nor is it shown in my '61 shop manual

When I get home I will check my '62's and see what is in that location

*edit*
just found this pic on my computer here at work showing my dash prior to my resto., and I don't have the whole for #4 (cig. lighter) I'll compare with my other '62s later.........

I just went out and look at mine a lot closer, it is a round hole with a notch at the bottom just like the others, but looking real close the notch is not as clean as the others either done differently or corroded more from the heat. So I am starting to agree with you that it probably is not factory. I have found other 61, and 62 fj40 pictures on the Internet with a cigarette lighter in that spot, without the ashtray. It is a logical place for an owner to put one, maybe some dealers did it. Now I must decide to put the lighter in there or weld that hole up. Yours has a big hole to the left of the cluster just like mine did.

I will look thru my '61 factory manual and the wirring diagram again and double check on the cig. lighter..... maybe it was a rare factory option:confused:

as for the whole on the left of the cluster two out of my three have had the exact same whole with an oil gauge in it..... I fixed that though:D

Here is a pic of mine all welded up.

Here is the dash layout from my 1963 Land Cruiser owners manual....... it is a little hard to ready but hopefully it will be of some help.

Also for what its worth my 1961 shop manual wirring diagram did not show an allotted area for a cig. lighter

Interesting that the picture has an ashtray. I have decided to leave mine, so many accessories use it might was well have one, but I do now agree it was not factory. Mine is a 62 but made in 61

oopps I meant to say it was from my '63 owners manual..... not '62:doh:

that would explian the ashtray.

cig lighters were much later.. I'd have to comb through my books. Even my 66 didn't have a cig lighter. my 64 doesn't even though they both have ash trays. probably coincided with dash change, dunno

Here's a pic of a 66 that was for sale a while back. My '65 has the lighter in the same position (below the ashtray). That would make sense from an ergonomic standpoint. I think it's funny that the lighter in the earlier ones is closer to the driver than the wiper switch.

BTW, it's not a cig lighter in my rig, it's an "accessory power port."

This was my 66... notice no cig.. Was your 65 orig to you? I think alot of people added cig lighters to earlier models. I think they were available earlier with lv's but i haven't looked in the books yet..

It depends on what people want...if it is a true restoration, then the evidence that cigarette lighters were not installed at the Toyota factory until around '66 is stronger than any evidence showing that Toyota "might" have installed them earlier...at least this is the way I see it. I also noticed that while most of the dash knobs in earlier cruisers tend to have a certain "look", the lighters do not really have that same "look"

This is not to say that a dealer did not install one, which would be similar to them installing heaters in the earlier rigs, so the question is how "true" one wants a restoration to be...I would go without one...but that is my 0.02

lighter assembly is listed in my 64 book the knob is different than the rest and would be marked with S. I think there are pics I posted of roots 45 that has one.. I'll have to find it.
