Hi there

Not sure where to post this since it crosses the 60-80 series boundary :P

Thing is, I have a HJ-61 with FF rear (cable locked) and I want to widen the axles, wanted to use a short side axle from a E-locked 80 series in the rear and then have a custom length shaft made for the front.

Has anyone done anything like this, are the splines on the 80 series axle the same as the 60 series? The short side has the long splines in the rear.

Or is there a simpler way to get wider axles?

I stretched a front housing by six-inches with DOM tubing (3.25" O.D. 1/4" wall) and full length gussets top and bottom cut from 3" square tubing so I ended up with a housing that is somewhat rectangular. Been flogging it for a while now, holding up nicely. The extra stability sure is welcome. Here's the link. https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/264609-front-axle-stretch.html

The splines are the same. Bobby Long will make you shafts that are splined at both ends and with his drive plate you can do whatever you want.

I'm just plain bad or it's much more easy to run 2" common wheel spacer and call it done ?

Spacers can loosen and you wont even know it till your watching your wheel cruising without you!

my thoughts exactly, just upgraded to 14mm bolts for that option :P

So maybe longer short-side in the rear (about 5") and just let the offset slide since the rear axle is really far back (maybe CV joint) and 2x2" spacer in the front?

How will the sky upgrade or spacer affect the steering? since I´d be moving the pivot point effectively further in.

This still increases the scrub angle in just the same way spacers do. FTR, I never had any issue with spacers, they never came loose.

FTR neither have I when I ran spacers. :)

I ran 1.5" wheel spacers for years without any issues. I now have 2" 6 lug to 8 lug adapters and have not had any problems in almost a year with them on. I use lock tight and a torque wrench to install them.
