Nice to have choices

Need any 62 parts to do another one? :D

I have helped 3 or 4 of my friends with FJ-62s rebuild their motors, and I have parted out two of them so I have removed and installed the front clips before. I agree with dd113 that the FJ-62 front clip is an upgrade, but I guess you were going for aesthetics not function.

I'm sure I could do it much faster the 10th time but hope I don't have to do it again!

How about a pic or two...

I personally cant stand the 62 front, much prefer the roundeyes over the "I look like a lifted Volvo 760 wagon" vibe the stock grill screams. Newer isnt necessarily beter, smaller lights have (seemingly) less output, and when's the last time you saw a 63 Impala SS next to the newer 04 FWD Impalas and said "yeah, the new one looks cooler"?

Aesthetics, certainly!

As far as function is concerned, I drove it at night tonight for the 1st time and honestly can't see any decrease in visibility. I don'y know a thing about the halogen lights I'm using but they must be good considering the negatives I've heard about 60 headlights

I think you should notice equal or more light output with the bigger light. Driving my 62 for the first time at night I couldnt believe my headlights were on, then I swapped to the Sylvania Silverstars & it improved, but nohing compared to my EB, Zuk or 4 Runner with the larger single lights per side.

red cruiser-

Exiled/Henry did the same swap as we all know....I don't remember him mentioning all the fab work you had to do....or maybe he left out some details...dunno. I'd like to hear a more detailed account of his swap. Not questioning your conversion, it looks awesome, but seems the hardest part I've heard of was rewiring the headlights.
I have a 62 and IMO the 4 squares up front suck...looks like a bad early 80's Pontiac station wagon set up. Nice job.

Sorry cruiser88 but you're too late. They've got a new owner already.

Yeah, Henry's post with pics is why I expected it to be much easier than it was. I wonder if different year 60 radiator supports may be different. I doubt it since that wouldn't make much sense but I don't know.

I suspect Henry left out some details which is cool, even knowing what I know now I'd still do it.

As I mentioned it took me a long time, the owner of the body shop would have fired me if I was an employee. :D IIRC he said it was a 1 man/5 hour job. I should mention we had to do stuff like prep the rad support for painting, paint it, etc. I was ready to just use the headlight brackets from the 60 and weld them to the 62 support. Actually had 3 experienced body men huddle over it and say, "Nope, can't do that" and they agreed.

The 62 raditor support is bracketed in by the fender so even when everything is loose the fenders have to be loosened to get it out and the 60 support in. After that we found the outside headlight attachment points were nowhere near those for the 60. We ground off the protruding mount and drilled new holes w/o welding anything on. Kind of half-assed but if I didn't tell you you wouldn't be able to tell. They are solid as can be. The same applies but less so on the other two mounts. Not hard but time consuming.

The grille snaps right in but you need the 60 hood latch support which I didn't have, I had to trim the 62 support down to fit because it protrudes much farther out.

The wiring is easy. You're just going from 4 lights to two so marrying the like colored wires makes sense. Just followed the color coding for the running light, turn signals which match. Finally we were left with 2 wires, one red and one green  Looked it all over again, made sure we had spare fuses and connected the red and green. Threw the switch and everything was perfect :D

Then there's the little stuff like mounting the headlights and aiming them, adjusting the hood latch, bumper stops etc. That all takes time.

That should cover everything. I think it's well worth the effort and time and would do it again in a heartbeat. For those of us that prefer the 60 "look" it's a no brainer.

good for you, just remember that 60 grilles don't deal with hottubs any better than 62's :D

Hey Boss
Question

can i use the 62 inner fender to do the swap or do i have to use the fj60 inner fenders to make it fit
