A million miles from anywhere
found an all original 40 out here in wyoming and the guy wants 6 grand. runs beautifully, original paint, interior and drivetrain but the ambulance door and rear pan are pretty rusted. it would be my frist purchase of an fj40. is this a good price?

well since your a million miles from anywhere.....parts wont be close

6k for a rusty rig is not the best deal

Any pics, what do you mean by pretty rusted. Are we talking about bad surface surface rust or major holes. When talking about rusty on an fj40 I would consider that to mean it probably weighs a lot less then when it was new, where my wife would consider a few spots of surface rust a major rust problem. So how much rust are we talking about. My kids call mine the Flinstone mobile because right now you could stick your feet out the bottom no problems, floor boards 100% gone from rust.

if you buy a rusty rig and you plan on replacing the rusty stuff then original paint dosnt really count for much... seeing as how you will probably repaint the whole thing once youre done fixing the rust....

but 6k for anything not in really nice condition is pretty high.... unless for some reason its "rare or collectible" <-- my .02 :meh:

i didnt take any pics but some of the rust is big enough i can put marbles through. and its only the rear of the vehicle. im not really worried about the rust though, i plan to overhaul everything from body and paint to the engine anyway. i was just hoping for an idea of what a 40 would be worth in this shape. the only rust on the rest of it is just surface rust under the floor matt.

if your going to do an over hall you can have a starter rig for alot less than 6k$$

I would have to agree with the above also. Personally I have seen a number of cruisers between here (Auburn, CA) and Reno, NV for less than 2K. All of which needed work of course but no rust buckets. As a matter of fact if I wasn't so cheap I could have had two more FJ40's sitting on my property for less than $2500. They'd be parked right next to my Nova, Power Wagon and FJ40. Of course the wife would be angry. Anyway, I scope out Craigslist constantly for good deals and they are out there.

So what year is it? That does make a difference. A 75 with drum brakes the price seems high. 83 with factory power steering, factory A/C and a split transfer case might be worth a good look to decided.
