when do you get into Moab? We are shooting
to roll in Sunday afternoon (7/22)
We are expecting to arrive in Moab on Saturday 7/21. Hit us up when you guys get into town. I’ll be driving there with Kamal so we will have 2 rigs ready for the trails.

Any fairly inexpensive handheld Ham recommendations?
Boafeng. I bought a two pack on Amazon a couple of years ago for like $90.

I feel the same. I really mentioned it only because I thought I’d put it out there that there will for sure be people ready to go wheeling even if the fire situation closes some trails. I hope and expect that will be fine, but just thought it might be good to pipe up to those wondering if more people are going to bail out. I think most people won’t but anyway just putting it out there. Glad to hear you are going and hope you find a swa I feel the same. I think Ohnoitsbreaux was looking for a squaw, my wife might take issue with me bringing a squaw along!

Ha! You’re right! :)
I was half asleep when I wrote that.

This was delivered this afternoon. I am going to see if I can knock out the licensing before we leave for Moab/Telluride.

When I studied for the HAM tech exam, I used a free app on iOS called “Ham radio exam” by Roy Watson. It helped out a lot and I passed the exam 100% due to this app.

^This will help a ton!

Use it while waiting in the TSA line at the airport, using the loo, wasting time on meaningless conference calls, etc... Short term memory is your friend...

That being said - I've heard other HAM's say that you might as well take the General class cert back-to-back with the Technician's - it can be done on the same day. Very similar test bank of questions. But I chickened out and only did the tech... If you do this, study accordingly.

I used the ap as well, along with the flash cards. The test only takes about 5 mins.

As a heads up, the test questions change in july thus a new study bank will be pulled from. I suggest anyone taking the test or thinking about it get it done quickly.

Cheers and good luck!

What are folks looking forward to in terms of trails? For me, I did Poughkeepsie for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. Black Bear is thrilling though it's hard to do without long periods of time sitting still.

It's probably been 10 years since I've been on Governors Basin. If I recall it's a bit narrow and tippy in spots but suitable for stock trucks. I'm also considering Picayune/Placer Gulch run. Of course, all the usual suspects are hard to beat.

This will be my first time in Telluride/Ouray so I'm open to whatever the group wants to run. Black bear seems like an epic trail and I would like to check that off my bucket list. :)

I’ll be wheeling Friday and Saturday. I want to do Imogene and Black Bear one day. I’m very open to something different the other day

FWIW I liked the Google Docs spreadsheet we didn’t last year for trail signup.

I want to hit Poughkeepsie and Yankee Boy this year. We bailed a day early two years ago and missed these.
We missed you guys on that one...going to be awesome

We haven't committed to that exercise as the groups tended to shift quite a bit from the original plan. So far I know we'll focus on a standard meetup spot for the first morning but then we may stage stagger the meetup times a bit in case we have multiple groups on the same trail. I guess a lot depends on the final headcount per day.

In the meantime, it'd be good for folks to get a sense of what they'd like to do as it should be easy to find like-minded souls each day. It looks like folks are staying in Telluride, Placerville, and Ouray. There's no reason for Ouray-based folks to travel to Telluride just to meet up if a group wants to do Alpine Loop starting from Mineral Creek, for example.

Personally, not speaking on behalf of the event, we're staying in Telluride and are considering something like the following:
  • Imogene => Black Bear (though it could make sense to get an early start and do BB early)
  • Governors Basin + Yankee Boy if time (too much to couple with Imogene unless camping on Governors... if you want to hike Blue Lakes I'd suggest making a morning b-line toward Ouray with the goal of getting to the trailhead by 10-11AM)
  • Mineral Creek => Poughkeepsie => Hurricane => Picayune => Placer => Silverton (early start would be good... this would be a long day)
  • Clear Lake / Secret Lake (never done it but close to Telluride!)
This may end up being the first trip where we don't do the Alpine Loop, which is probably my favorite route of all time, but at the same time we've based out of Ouray on probably 20 trips and never Telluride.

The only issue with being in Telluride is that I’ve never based out of there and most trails seem to start on the other side of Ouray. Will be some road drive time to get to some good trails.

Winging it works for me, I just need to know where to meet up around Telluride on Friday. Wish I could get in sooner but never enough vacation time...

We are in Telluride from Wednesday to Friday (leaving Saturday morning)..That said I am going to try and bribe a few folks to run Imogene/Black Bear one day and Poughkeepsie the other or vice versa. Using Imogene as the Ouray trails gateway makes sense to me - but I am sure I am over simplifying ;)
