Has anyone ever put a big block in a fj? I have a 455 buick in my drag boat right now hull is splitting, is cammed for water and cooler by water so id have to change that but. Was built by a buddy and dynoed 600 a couple years ago. Im getting board of the 2f my 78, but is this engine bay big enough to stuff one in? pics would help of the biggest motor stuffed into one.thanks

Had a buddy in California that had a 454 in one of his cruisers. It will fit.
I know there are several other big blocked FJ40s around as well.

I haven't done it, but from what I've gathered seeing others' rigs, there are a few items you may want to think over. Short neck water pump or elec fan only, largest radiator/ shroud that'll fit, block hugger headers, added bracing at motor mounts, oilpan clearance @ front diff, may require a pillow block for steering shaft, & swap out rest of drivetrain to support 600 hp :D

it has been done i had one in a 72, cooling was a nightmare but it was fun on the throttle! had to custom make motor mounts but it fit. sorry no picks though. i eventually traded it out to a jet boat guy for a 350.

The only time that I seen a 454 in a 40 series cruiser .. the nightmare are the temp ..

huge alum rad .. with other remote alum rad in the back runnig both flex a lite S blade fans and meen green alt to splu all the power to the fan ..

We ran into this guy on a run a year or two ago.

If I remember right he's was running a 455. Portals, 44s, coils, and missing a driveline. That much power is going to eat some s*** up. Be prepared to go monster big on everything. Pretty much nothing Toyota ever made is going to handle that kind of HP.

yea ive been looking around, i have some dump truck axle laying around those shold hold it :), but in all reality i think im going to put the whole boat up to trade for a 350 with tranny and transfercase. the big block just seems to be a little to much work. im ripping the motor out of the 40 reguardless. ill be posting pics of the whole install, not here because its not going to be anything special w/350 .

Actually this is Rod Peters 40. It has a corvette 350 in it. But his brother has a FJ-45 pick-up with the 454 in it. Good guy's, and great wheeling buddy's.

Ah... I knew one of those guys had a big block. I thought it was the 40. Here is the pic of the 45 I have...

A friend has two 40's with 455 Olds in them. One with TH400, other with LC 4 speed. He loves them, tons of torque. Lots of weight, though and axle upgrades are a must. Sorry, no pics, engine compartment IS tight !

The 45 has one. Cooling hasn't been a problem- belt-driven, big aluminum radiator with a good shroud.. fenders still have inners. The only weird thing done to get it all to work was to dent up one of the headers to clear the steering rod.

Makes a sweet rumble :)
