42s on my FJ40?

I talked to a guy who runs 42" IROKs on his FJ40 today. The back half of his 40 is tubed and the rear is 4-linked. He runs the straight 6/SM465/Cruiser t-case on FJ40 axles with 27 spline chromo birfs/axles. I think he's been running these tires for about a year now. The only breakage he's had is the stock t-case.

After talking to him, it kinda makes me want to try the 42s again!

I thought with at least 5.29 R&P .. ?

Man. aleast a 4to1 case in there to replace the stock one

RK is running a LoMax 3:1 NP205 :grinpimp:

Honestly, swapping to an auto will help your axles live longer, no B.S.

Dustin? I think he has broken at least one front r&p since he went 42's. He wheels alot too! Cryo may fix that. I say DO IT. Cool factor of keeping it as Toyota as possible is worth it!

By the way, my 42x17" IROK & 17x9 TR's with 3/8" centers only weigh 10 lbs more than the 38.5x14.5 SX / 15x10 + Bobby long beadlock kit combo.. As was speculated before, weight kills axles more so than absolute tire size.

Yep, I talked to Dustin about his 42s. I've wheeled with him a couple of times in the past, but not since he went to 42s. Our rigs are built pretty similar except I have a V8. That's the main concern I have with running 42s on mine vs Dustin running them on his.

i don't mean to hi-jack this thread but i have been thinking along similar lines, except that i want to go to 39" krawlers and still use my stock axles, i plan to upgrade to six shooter knuckles and poly rear axle shafts, i would love to cryo both of my third members as well, i just haven't found a local place to do that yet.......from what i've seen side-by-side, 39" krawlers look to be every bit as big as 42" iroks, maybe it's an illusion though.....krawlers are the most amazingly sticky tires

I have 39" red label Krawlers on WE Beadlocks, using 2" spacers to compensate for FJ40 axle width and wheel offset. Love em - I like 42" IROK's too - and had contemplated that before I went with the Krawlers. They're not on the 40 right now - I'll see if I can't find a scale?

So far I've busted a Poly Chromo Rear long side axle shaft (waiting on warranty confirmation and am out $450 in the interim - that sucks), have toasted both small pattern knuckles running 4x4 labs high steer arms (no worries - had the 6 shoots and matching 4x4 labs arms on hand - plus they would have survived if I tightened more often right ;-). I've broken several pinions - but I'll attribute that to some set up issues as well as driving style. Kick arse tire!

Am in debate land on next mods. Definitely 4-linking like R.K. and others. From there it's uncertain - I have a D60 with some good stuff in it - and really like the STAK or Atlas, but am just not sure, prefer to keep a Toyota rear just as I don't know anything about Dana's yet. If that Diamond axle in the Slee Raison (sorry forgot name) were more affordable - I'd jump on that with the 35 spline D-35 axle conversion, and go STAK pronto. Till then - not sure....sorry rambling again. Back to 42's.....

fj401ton It's only money, if you don't spend it the wifey will, and who wants a flower pattern couch or more tuperware:D

That cracks me up:cheers:.....a man who knows his woman:princess:

I have changed my mind (again) and decided to try the 42s. I found a good deal on a set of 42/17 IROKs, so I bought them. We'll see how they work out. Hope to have the Cruiser/buggy ready for Harlan in April. If worse comes to worse, I'll upgrade to 1 tons.

Glad to hear you dropped the purse. Just keep an eye out for the D60 and when a good deal comes up grab it. A friend just got a D70 for his rear and now I want one , the bottom of the diff is as smooth as a baby's butt, and cheep. He paid 50 bucks with a lockright (sp) for a complete diff. enjoy the 42's:cheers:

I also bought a set, 14/42-15s.
I am hopeful that the rpm and slower torque build up of the diesel will be easier on axles but i will be buying polys for the rear and Longs supers for the front.
I do have a line on a 14 bolt FF rear just in case.

A diesel will have the opposite affect because of the way it builds torque. While rpms may be slow the torque builds very quickly and that can break stuff. So if you're in a situation were you are bound it's best not to stab the throttle on a diesel. Your longs and polys will be good insurance and you have a smart plan with planning in a 14bolt if needed. An auto would help cushion driveline shocks.

The dieslel does have more torque but it builds at a slower rate with less shock to the system so i have been told.

If you look at a torque curve of a diesel engine you will notice that it rises very quickly compared to a gas engine. Diesels generally produce most of there torque around 2000 rpms, much sooner than a gasser so that causes a bigger and quicker shock to the drivetrain.
