42s on my FJ40?

This being my first diesel i have no first hand knowedge and i must admit what i was told seemed a little odd.
I guess i "wanted" to believe what i was hearing so... now that you have me all depressed, pass the Prosac.

any updates on how the 42's on stock axles are working out? i read on pirate that you can now buy 42" irok comp. stickies directly from interco....i can't help but wonder if the increased traction and ease of approaching objects with a larger stickier tire would possible be less stressful on my axles than me constantly having to slam my crappy a$$ sx's into stuff to try to bump up over it? lol, but no doubt if that did turn out to be the case then it would only lead to me slamming into larger than ever obstacles...

If you look at a torque curve of a diesel engine you will notice that it rises very quickly compared to a gas engine. Diesels generally produce most of there torque around 2000 rpms, much sooner than a gasser so that causes a bigger and quicker shock to the drivetrain.

Much more if it's a Turbo Diesel, when the Turbo kicks on full boost you will notice the real amount of power in segs ..

No updates yet, I haven't finished rebuilding the rig yet. I hope to have some updates in a month or so.

Another way to look at the sticky tires is that the increased traction would slip less, putting more force on the axles when they grab - potentially breaking more axle parts. I guess it depends on what your driving style is.

R.K. I have a rear for ya..

D44 6 Lug, out of a rodeo... Its 30 spline now, but they make upgrade axles to 35 spline... Heck 4 you I will sell it cheap:D

That was going to be my rear, until I found a 60 Already Cut.

Didn't know you were shopping for a rear axle - I have that D60 sitting at Alan's shop near Traveler's Rest that I need to sell to recoup my loss on the boogered 40" MTR's I got last year. Supposed to have Yukon or Moser shafts, disc brakes and a 4.10 chunk. Only downside is overall width and I'm pretty sure it's 8 lug. Might just hang onto it for a future buggy project, but having just ordered a Orion HD and disc kit from Jessie - and well, hot damn, funds are low :D.

Driving style might be key, after busting a 30 spline Poly shaft while idling up a hard line, I've been really really babying it!

I'm not shopping for a new rear axle, I think David was joking. I won't rule out an axle upgrade in the future if my current axles don't survive the 42s. If I upgrade, it will probably be a Dana 60 and 14 bolt.

WHat fun is that??

Exactly. Mind you, I'm practicing the "preferred East Coast Driving Style", and idling is what is done right before the "clunk" of the stupid pedal hitting the floor.

I know it's not the most graceful or even the best way to get up things, but it's really, REALLY damn fun... :steer:

Whatever traction you have here its normally on the first go. So if you can't crawl it in the first few attempts there is nothing else to do but romp the skinny pedal. :steer:

Damn nice .. where to see more pics .. ?

Amen brother! We can all attest to that - and like he said, it is damn fun!!! :D Getting a might tad jealous seeing Rokwells and now with you going 14/D60.

C'mon - R.K. Hurry up and finish so we can see some wheeling pics.

I hope to have some wheeling pics in a month or so. I have no immediate plans to swap axles, only in the future if my current axles don't hold up.

Don't be jealous.. Had I gone with 'tons, I wouldn't have been able to do the build the way I wanted (4ws, coilovers, linked F&R), I just went the cheap route for strength. The rocks came in quite a bit cheaper, with the big penalty of weight.. (I've got about 1100lbs unsprung weight PER axle - that's nearly half the total weight of the rig!).

The upside is absolutely stoopid off-camber stability, but a lighter rig will always climb better.

RK's rig should work great, we'll just set his rev limiter at 3000rpm and put a block of wood between the throttle pedal and the floor.. :D

Tapage - Some wheeling pics of me (other than what RK posted) is HERE , and click on the land cruiser link..
