I've been getting good help from the guys in the diesel section on narrowing down by troubles with the 3b not running right.

Got it narrowed down to a fuel delivery issue somewhere between the filler neck and the water separator (on frame rail under driver's seat)

Question: Was there more than one person making the long-range tanks?
What pick-up tube do they use?
Anyone got a good original tank somewhere near Memphis?
Are there any substitutes for the original? fj60?

Thanks,

JW

I posted this also in the diesel section, but maybe pig farmers are the better group to ask.

My long range tank has two short sections of metal tubing protruding from the passenger side.
One has the fuel line attached to it and the other is capped.
Is this another fuel pick-up?
Can I just switch them?

Tank has 4 vents on driver's side, so I don't think it's a vent.

I noticed a new dent in the bottom of the tank, so perhaps this has blocked my pick-up.

Can you post a pic? The capped line may be a return line that would have been used by most (if not all) years of gasser engines w/ a return line from the carb. Trying to pull fuel out of this line would likely not work very well.

Someone once cut open a tank they were scrapping so we could all see how the various lines were routed. I do not remember what thread that was in...

Is there an access port you an open on top to look at the pick-up?

Good luck!

It looks just like this one. You can just see the two hard lines at the top of the picture with white tape on them.

Here's my 55gal MAF tank I had refinished, mounts to stock location but you have to move the spare:

One is a pick up and the other is the return, usually they cap the return on the early trucks but you should need it on a diesel?

Tucker

Yes, just make sure you are using the right one for pick-up! Not sure where the return line routes to inside the tank...

It's been running fine for a couple years hooked up to the one it's on now; so I assume it's on the pick-up, not the return; but, reading the PO's build thread, it sounded like he guessed. It does start to suck air down below 1/8 of a tank or so. Maybe it's hooked up backwards?

The 3b does not return diesel to the tank, but to the intake side of the fuel pump from injector 4.

Tucker, do you know which one is pick-up and which return on you're tank? Or at lease which one you have the fuel line attached to?

The front one on mine is capped off; fuel line attached to the rear.

Thanks,

JW

The rear fitting is the pick-up.
The dent caused the pick-up to sit in a valley. Silted up and clogged the pick-up. The pick-up is on the left of the picture against the side wall.

While the tank was out I noticed I was missing one of the bushings for the anti-roll (anti-wrap?) bar.

I THINK I can reshape the steel piece that retains the bushing.
Anyone have a spare?

Nevermind.
Found a polyurethane set on flea-bay for $18.

It has bolt holes on both ends of the steel retainer instead of a bolt hole and a tab.
If I can't make it work, I'll let you know; but I figure it will work fine.

Thanks anyway.

I cut a hole in the top and beat the dent out, then cleared the pick-up tube. It was plugged with debris. (not the sandwich) Hopefully that will keep the diesel flowing for a while. Put a patch on the hole and screwed it down with a gasket and some silicone.

Craftsmanship at its finest!

Update:

Hung tank last night after installing bushing. It was a pain, but nothing some busted knuckles and some language suited to longshoremen didn't fix.
Just finished with a test drive over lunch. Happy to report the diesel seems to be flowing once again!!

Also, I think I will have to start calling it the "Sports Pig". I no longer feel the need to throw out an outrigger when taking sweeping bends. And, my Cruiser lean appears to have disappeared. Who knew…
