I (my wife and I) picked up a running '68 fj40 when we finshed the remodel on our houseand got bored. One proj. on the cruiser led to another and I'm down to a frame off, 4 linked rear, 08 5.3L-4l60e-3sd tcase. I havent built the rear yet but I just picked up my johny joints today and will start fabbin the brackets this weekend.

i've read tons of 4 link posts but your links and axel trusses are by far the meanest.

I will have to read up on the front coil overs you used...very intresting!

I think the value went up, but I think value would have been even better w/out the dovetail, IMO. The narrowed ass end, fully exposed tire thing takes it off the daily driver list, but will be awesome in the rocks for sure.
Question for you. With your fab skills, why would you spend the time with the dovetail instead of tubing it in ? Just curious.

yeah, Im still scratchin my head on the streetable aspects, I guess it is what is now :lol: I should be OK If I stay somewhat local, after all... the local officers here stop by the shop to see the progress from time to time, one even told me I'm more than welcome to come do a burnout in front of his house when its done :grinpimp:

I guess I just thought it would be cool to retain the stock frame and accomplish the dove , that and some rules for different events or competitions around here will out class you if its not a full frame .:D Once I get the Hardtop dove finished I think it will tie in nicely!

Your cruiser definitely not much of a street machine anymore. I think it's cool how you dove tailed the stock frame rails. I have never seen it done like that, as far I can remember.

I would wonder how much weight you could really take out by doing tube instead? The frame rails back there aren't that heavy. I would think that you would be nearly the same using tube. Tube is lb for lb stronger in its structure, than in the channel the frame is made. To really make it lighter you'd need to calculate it all out. Just my thoughts

I'd love to dove tail my cruiser, Sadly the cops in town aren't cool. They all know my name, and I think they all have it out for me. I'd possibly do it like this when my cruiser becomes a full on trailer queen.

What is your wheel base? I didn't catch it if it was already posted.

There probably woundn"t be that much difference in weight when all is said and done ,as for the strenghth of one opposed to the other... with the boxing i did to the frame and added crossmembers along with the way I intend to tie the "cage" into the frame it should be plenty strong . So all in all it's probably
a pretty even trade as to what way one chose to go about it.

I was told today that as far as streetability goes ..as long as I meet the mud flap requirements along with something that extended up at least half the way over the top of the tire, I would be legal !!! :D

I've seen others build fenders that are similar to the ones you might find on a motorcycle. Especially the front tire on a street bike, that me be the best example. It would mount right to the axle, wrap over and cover the tire. You would build it so it could be removed easily.

I have always thought about doing it like this. You could cover the tire almost completely and no cop could say anything. You take them off as soon as you get off road, it would only take a couple bolts to hold it secure. I thought that with a rear disc brake conversion you may be able to use some of the old drum mounting holes. I really haven't looked at that mounting possibility too hard, so it may not work. I have wheel spacers so that might be the ticket there.

Just an idea

It would be cool to be able to "street" your cruiser. Are you planning to restore it with nice paint and what not? Or is it gonna get hammered on, and wheeled to it's limit?

thats an example I will have to explore :hhmm: my original Idea when I was told what would be needed consisted of "truck mudflaps" and some solid round stock / 1"x.120 round tubing or could possibly be square tube As I have the dies to bend either one, and have them attach to the lower body protection that frame's the wheel opening and building it as a removable unit that would lay flat in the tub when not in use.:meh:

I plan on wheeling this thing to it's limit , "with caution " as I dont have intentions of destroying the Body, I would like to keep it respectable looking at best .

The color I'm leaning towards is "Dune Biege" 416, since the original color judging by the untouched area's under the dash and beneath the bracketry I have removed is a Biege color....the black has kinda "grown" on me though ;)

It's amazing seeing this thing come together. Great job and skills, obviously you've learned valuable stuff from previous projects and it shows in your build up here. Looking forward to following along.

Thanks boots!! I tried consuming some of your build last night And had the same thought about watching yours come together ,WOW!! I have to admit the whole "diesel" thing is out of my league as I dont know enough about them to dive in ,but your build got me thinking :hhmm: (I have an 80 that is next on my list of project's) ;)

Sounds like you've got a collection of landcruisers. A 40, 60, 80 ... sticking to the evens?

I like your motor mounts, nice way to skin the cat with that one.

Should be 6-ways of bad a$$ once it is completed.

Definate props on the welds, very nice.

Thanks, also for the compliments, I guess all that steel probably does look heavy,and if it is , at least it's low :hillbilly: I have tried to keep it minimal the thing is ...it all has a purpose :meh: Overbuilt?? meh maybe , but I'm hoping to wheel the Hammers someday !!

I will be tapping the box for hydro assist in the future once I get the majors done,I have allowed room for it.;)












Sorry for the lack of update's lately, but frankly there hasn't been any ......I'm currently focusing on this "project" :rolleyes:

Well I found some time to do a little more on the 40, I built the steering shaft completeing the connection from the cherokee column to the fj 80 box


this is how I did the steering shaft...I used a piece from the Toyota pu steering shaft and slipped it into the "D" shaped sleeve of the removable portion of the cherokee steering column shaft. (hope that made sense ) then I used a "rodend" for supporting the p.u. portion of the steering shaft in between the "D" shaped sleeve and the u joint of the p.u. shaft and then made a bracket to attach it to my shock hoop.

On the steering box end I used a piece of the splined shaft from the 80 series box and it slipped into the tubed end of the p.u. steering shaft ,and then welded it into place...here are some pics

I also got the front shock hoop's and removable crossover bar done , the crossover bar will double as a radiator upper mount and provide some radiator protection,it will also have two tube's extending from it and tieing into plates on the firewall to tie it all together and provide some engine protection ..should I get in that situation :lol:
