it doesn’t say anything on the back. the data sheet says good for transmissions and axles but nothing specific about syncros. says it’s dana approved so i assume there are syncros in there.

this would be better...Shell Spirax S4 TXM Tractor Transmission & Hydraulic Oil
i have the same grief finding GL4 in BC.

sorry i’m gonna make this hard as i’m not expert but the back of that bottle says this

non syncro approved.

Read the whole product listing: "Recommended for conventional hypoid differentials and non-synchronized manual transmissions."

clearly i’m missing something. is a h42 not a syncro tranny? there is nothing there saying it’s good for syncro or at least anything different than the gl-5 i put in.

i just put a lot of work installing my tranny and i don’t want to take it out because i grenaded it by using the wrong oil. call me paranoid but i want to put the right stuff in. the gl-5 as i’ve ready many places will corrode yellow metals in syncros will it not?

I bought my 40 brand new in ‘75. Still a shared DD with my 60. Tranny and/diffs have never been out of the vehicle.

I‘ve always used this or similar oil. And zero issues.

I was at O'Reilly a/p the other day and saw they had gallon jugs of gl4 on the shelf.

im Curious why in the year 2023 , when TOYOTA now installs 100% Full Synthetic Fluids in All Vehicles Globally , that the simple and scientific proven hands down A+ Positive Benefits results both long and short term use are not mentioned here ?
.

i just completed a comprehensive study and hunt for the BEST possible 80W90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil on the face of the Globe , for GHOST who sports a H42 currently as well , and this was the result without any question ....

- the continued use of traditional conventional old-skool 80w90 gear oil , will simply continue on the progress of age and time wear factor to metallurgy in a land cruiser gear box or axle , and not provide any additional protection in a severe driving conditions as TOYOTA terms them in owners manuals and FSM's ...

- where as the use of Fully Synthetic 80W90 not only provides long term current metallurgy preservation , it also meets the criteria and demands of the Severe driving conditions ...

- the Rocket science is real , FAQ check it and report back , io personally and also professionally use only 100% full synthetic lubrication products down to my Propeller Shaft and steering linkage zerk fittings , and power steering and DOT 3 / 4 brake systems ...

- it works , and i have experienced the long term benefits results to state just that ..

- i started using MOBILE 1 20W50 motor oil in high skool in the 1990's as well as Valvoline too , the Gear Oils in Full Synthetic rolled out shortly there after , Valvoline mainly , they no longer offer 80W90 , but these folks below do ....

- meets all the land Cruiser GL-4 / GL-5 spec. too ..fyi

^^ That's what I was thinking when I saw the price, although I'm not sure I paid any less for the synthetic stuff I grabbed.

RE: Modern GL5, I was originally going to get Valvoline 80W-90 High Performance Conventional Gear Oil. It has "GL4" and "GL5" on the bottle. But then it also had a very prominent warning not to use with synchros. Hence, this thread.
Amsoil has gear oil that is safe for synchro's and the prices is not that bad.

Reviving this: Shamefully, I’ve not addressed this since purchase (PO was a mechanic and informed me he’d serviced both transmission & transfer case)
but I had to top off fluid some years ago and did use a small amount of GL-5…. Running across this thread gave me cause for concern so
I’m going to drain and fill with a GL-4 oil. Referring to service manual, I found this and feel a little less worried though.

Be sure to check the label on the container to make sure it is compatible with the synchro's. Differential oil is not compatible with the same spec.
Transmission oil
  • Protects against increased heat and pressure
  • Outstanding cold-flow properties
  • Protects brass synchronizers
  • Friction-modified
  • Excellent seal compatibility
  • Inhibits rust and corrosion
  • Long service life

I usually do extensive research and read tons of articles on anything of this sort and……. I’m a lying dog! 🤣
Just copy what @GA Architect does and call it good……

.

For the GL4 & GL5 technical topics as a whole i have found this particular TOYOTA specific Tutorial Video to be very good and a Solid resource to refer to
i have been following The Car Care Nut for close to as long as he has had his TOYOTA only You Tube Channel ,

He has the credentials to back up what he speaks about in my world .

He has shot and produced a few Land Cruiser Specific long-length and very comprehensive FSM Step by Step Videos on Jobs like SOLID FRONT Axle re-seal on the 80 Series that can help and be utilized on all older pre- 80 series Land Cruisers too FJ40 FJ55 with ot without Front Disc brakes

i feel this one below address and gets deeper then deep on the indeed often confusing
GL4 & GL5 when to use it when to not to and why ....

He also touches on the all important Viscosity TECH. and relates it in a way i can relate to when doing my parts and supplies list before any gear box and or axle Gear Oil related repair or preventive maintenance etc.

please post your thoughts below so @imyahucklbrry can make the best gear oil decision for his
1982 FJ40LV-KCJA usa spec.

Because
