Ok, so i have owned my dream truck for 2 years now (hdj81 1HD-T turbo diesel under 100,000km, 3x lock, factory winch, factory fridge/ice maker etc) the only problem is my family is growing. From the factory these trucks did not come with the 3rd row seats and the rear floor pan/ wheel wells are not pre set up to accept them. I have the ability to install the anchor systems to install these but have not been able to find out if the 3rd row will do 2 or 3 seat belts. I swear i have seen pics of 3 belts but do not know what year they came in if they did at all. I need 8 seat capacity, i am dreading not being able to achieve this because if i cant i may have to put my truck up on the block to fund a ... a...... a domestic excursion or suburban. Can any fellow mudders shed light on this for me?

The 3rd row had 3 seat belts for several years, then down to 2 (North America). If you have/get a two seat belt set of seats, you can just order the seat belt for the third. IIRC, the only difference was the seat belt was "missing" on the later models, it is just a bolt on to add it back. There have been several threads on this over the years.

iirc, the 91-92 FJ80s had the 3 belts in the 3rd row. 93-97s had 2 in the 3rd row. lack of 3rd row seats was something that also turned me off of the HDJ81. for some reason, the JDM gassers had the 3rd row, but not the diesels...weird.

Thanks guys, I have a line on all the brackets, seats and the floor pan. I think i will just get the stuff and install them then if its as easy as adding the 3rd belt.

I am going to be doing the same thing. I'll be watching to see how everything goes.

Cheers

I believe 91-94 came with 3 belts across the back and it switched to only 2 in 95.

I believe its true. The 91-94 has the 3 seat belts and the 95-97 have the 2 seat belts. Both my 91 and 94 have the 3 seat belts. My brother has a 93 and he has the 3 belts

If you need a grey belt for the center. I have 2 sets.

Both my 93 JDM and my 96 UKl have 3 belts in the 3rd row. Guess it's a local market thing !

hi folks, gonna bump this up and ask to see anyones progress on gettin their 3rd row in? i've found a set out west/grey ($100 + shipping) that matches my rig and there's a tan set in buffalo,NY that's being sold for 150$US.
i can't find these threads through searches (but still trying different key words), that shows pics and how that bracket was jimmied up to bolt in and how the rear shoulder belt was isntalled (i'm guess one has to cut the plastic to feed it through?). am i just goint to mangle my trunk trying to make this work?

hope anyone has leads to a thread with pics...

cheers.
romey

Just dug up this thread as my wife is asleep on the couch and I have nothing to do. In one of the linked threads it discussed the legality of this mod. A OK state trooper told me that adding any additional seat belts or seats that were not OE to the vehicle is illegal. That being said, I will probably do this as all three of my boys want to sit in the back and leave baby sister in the middle. I was also known to use a ratchet strap to hold a booster seat down in the back of my xj. It worked fine but scared the poo out of my wife!

Funny you should bring this up....

I recently got pulled over in my '29 Ford hotrod while driving through a checkpoint.....

Cop said he pulled me out of the lineup because he didn't see me wearing a seatbelt

Thing is, in 1929, there were no seatbelts!! ;p

The car is exempt from all smog and safety equipment that were not original equipment :grinpimp:

I did, however, install lap belts (which I always wear, he just didn't see them)

After explaining all of this, he didn't know what to think and actually suggested I get a 5-point racing harness, then just let me go :meh:

I wouldn't worry about it, the chances that a trooper pulls you over, and knows that the OEM seat belt you have added, is not stock for your year, though it is for other years, is about 1 billion to 1.:D If you ever get that ticket, buy a lottery ticket on your way home!
