Nice. Any obstacles in doing those jobs yourself? Where did you get your new parts from?

I got my kit from Man-A-Fre. Not sure if I'd recommend them again, though. They just weren't on the ball with customer service. One major issue I had was the spindle measured dead nuts 50.00mm where the inside wheel bearing would ride. One of the Koyo bearings fit perfectly, but the other would not. I measured it, and it was something to the effect of 49.97mm, while the other was 50.02mm... Bizarre manufacturing blunder, I guess.

So I was forced to get a new bearing from NAPA since we were already knee deep. However, their bearings are good quality, from ye olde Chicaco Rawhide...

The other issue I ran into was the spindle bushing was different with the kit. Although I was told the new bushing looked more like the OEM, and the one I pulled looked like an imposter, it didn't make me fell all too good. These were also a pain to remove... I used a pilot bearing puller from Harbor Freight, but had to modify the ends that grabbed.

I also couldn't separate the birfs from the inner axle. I used PVC, so maybe there was too much flex. I just accepted my fate, and since they looked decent, I packed them with grease, and threw it back together.

just checking in, got this 92 cruiser last May with 159000 mi on the clock. loving driving on the slow lane, so far ;). Did some need to do list: changed engine oil, flushed power steering and radiator fluids, put new 3 drive belts and 3 radiator hoses. drain and replaced front and rear differential fluids and overhaul rear brakes. just ordered factory knuckle rebuild kit and coming on Monday.

Checking in

I am new to the cruiser scene and have found this to be a very useful tool. I have researched everything from tire sizes and gears to the infamous "clunk". I appreciate all of the wisdom that is shared here and I am proud to be a part of your community. I just bought an all original from the original owner 1992 FJ80 with 336K on the clock and running strong. I am running stock gears with 35x12.5x15 BFG All Terrain's on stock "X" wheels. No lift yet but no issues either. New Birf's on order but other that she is perfect and runs like a champ. I have owned many Tacoma's and 4Runner's but the FJ80 instantly bonded itself to my heart. I live in Alaska and don't think I'll ever own anything but a TLC from here on out. Love the 3FE too (one of Toyota's finest IMO).

A great source of cruiser info is Mark W..... search him out for any advice or help needed.

Picked this '92 up a few months ago. PNW truck with zero rust other than a crusty exhaust system. Looks like PO took great care of it. A few Napa parts but regular PM was done was by the looks of everything. 187k on the ticker. Compression was 135 in four cylinders and 130 in the other two. Interior is damn near new! Rear main seal is weeping a bit. Knuckles seem to be pretty good. PO even threw some OEM front rotors. All fluids/filters changed.
I've been hoarding parts & stashing them in the garage for an epic garage 3-day weekend.
Have a new radiator (Mr.T), water pump & gaskets/studs/bolts, new aqua fan clutch, TONS of hoses, crank seal, cap, plugs, wires and all the random kit (including a few gallons of red). Current radiator is close to s***ting the bed so I figured while I was in there...

First FJ80

Just bought my FJ80, 1991. It needs some work. Not sure what the guy before me was doing but a 2.5" lift, new wheels and tires will be coming eventually. So far love it but having some starting issues.
Was looking at the OME lifts... anyone out there with one that would suggest one way or the other? Also what is a good AT tire size with that? Was thinking about a 32".

1992 3FE 200k

White 3FE with 201k on it. Replaced transmission, ball joints and everything electrical that you can think of. Replaced cold start injector with OEM new part, but car still gives me intermittent problems starting when cold. Built a storage p,atform in the back that fits all of my fishing gear underneath and a full sized air mattress on top. Pd 4k for it two yrs ago and had to put another 10k into it. Please tell me the bleeding is almost done lol. Located in Islip, NY.

92 FJ80, and I believe I am the champ so far with 220K on this high powered beast. Birf's done a little while ago, new PS pump, clogged valve cover wouldn't let the PCV system work and oil, oil, everywhere! Took a couple grand to figure out that one. Ugh.

Oh yeah, Mot hooked me up with rear LED's, clear blinkers/side markers, and Cdan took care of the front corners. Ripped the ghetto fabulous step bars, sissy crash bar, bug shield, window shields, and sunroof shields from previous owner (what was it with him and shields??) And now, it's starting to look cool.

Managed to stop a Dodge 1500 the other day when he couldn't seem to, and now I need a new rear bumper, any suggestions?

Oh yeah, burns no oil, PS fluid, coolant, or brake fluid.

Richmond VA or thereabouts.

-Jared
I'm interested in this valve cover clog that you mentioned. My '91 FJ80 is running a little rough, and has oil in the air intake and MAF body. The mechanic says worn rings, but I want to make sure it's not something else before I commit to a rebuild.
How did you diagnose the valve cover issue?
Thanks, Mark

92 fj80 jdm

Purchased about 4 weeks ago for $1500:
92 Right-hand Drive FJ80
ODO showing 87,000 KM
Front and rear lockers

Replaced Steering Relay Rod ends.
Will be doing the front knuckles soon.

Location: Germany

Sheesh, I'm so intimidated by all the crazy rigs and amazing deals folks got on here. But who cares, I've wanted an FJ 80 since they came out, sought out the 3FE years, and now I've got one. :D

1991 FJ80 3FE bought for $3200 from a Mud member/TLC addict who didn't have time to work on it with the other three active TLC projects he's working.
ARB winch bumper with Warn M10,000
Mystery OEM rear tire carrier
PPO (previous previous owner) rattle-canned fender flares

I loved the off-road read gear on the outside, but the inside's a bit of a mess. Abused (but mostly intact) upholstery, spiders (two live ones found so far), whacked out PPO stereo install with gobs of electrical tape and what looks like an attempted woofer (or maybe the only functioning speaker, not sure yet) in the rear pass side storage bin, and one working power window (Dr side rear). Plus musty smell.

But that's today, and she's already serving as daily driver and planned weekend warrior. I work slow and steady, tight budget, no garage. Just me, hand tools, the FSM and this forum - that set-up worked for my 30 year old motorcycle for the last 7 years, I'll make it work on this rig.

Looks great! I like the black flares with the red - good combo.

Thanks, man! I love the look, too, and to be honest, it took me a couple of days before I looked close enough to realize it wasn't factory. Close inspection reveals the maroon paint underneath.

Hi All.
Newbie to this forum and a Cruiser but not a newbie to 4WD's.

I live in Melbourne Australia and picked up my first Cruiser in May to do up.
A pretty standard 91 3FE, just had a TJM alloy bar on it and needed some TLC to get it up to scratch, only done 230000km and an Auto.

The day I picked it up:

IMG_0338.jpg

Pretty dirty and grotty when I picked it up, owners were heavy smokers and all ashtrays were overflowing, still have the smell in there now !!

Car didn't look like it had ever been offroad and the service book shows a history until 150000km's

I am a mechanic by trade so have spent a lot of weekends slowly building it up to where it is today, and taking it out for a shakedown run on the weekend for the first time to Strickland Spur track.

Build photos here:

Landcruiser%20build

I don't have a very current photo with stuff I have added but will get some on the weekend.

Stuff I have done:

New Radiator and windscreen
Replaced dist cap, rotor and leads
New sump gasket
resealed steering box
Adjusted valve clearance
Leaned off mixtures
Advanced timing (we run 91 octane as "normal" unleaded here !!)
Changed all oils/fluids
Replaced head unit and all speakers
New Cv's and wheel bearings
New slotted/dimpled rotors and Bendix 4WD pads
Flushed brake fluid
Fitted some "used" Outback drawers
Kaymar rear tyre swing/carrier
ARB Deluxe winch bar and Warn Magnum 10k winch
Lightforce Stryker 175's
2 inch lift (King Springs and Koni heavy track's)
ABR sidewinder dual battery isolator and monitor
Sliders
And probably a whole lot of other things I have forgotten.
