I hit 147k today in my 91'. who has less than 91k?

There's an FJ62 in town here with 70+K miles on it. Pretty good shape otherwise too, though a bit of rust is showing up in the usual places. I knew the owner. "Knew" because he gave it away to an employee of his. :bounce:

I know the shift to reverse or drive clunk mystery has been covered on the forum, and I think I read them all. Even cast a wider net and there are folks with Rav4's that have the mysterious clunk and some 4runners,
The most experienced people on this forum have chimed in on possible suspects, u joints, drive plates?, general slack in the FT4WD system, and the simple advice to "live with it". Supposedly it is worse for us 3FE owners.
Question is, how bad is your clunk? Mine is bad enough that people that know cars, and are within earshot look my way like wtf...?.
More specifically, my experience is that it is quiet when the drive-train is cold, then gets worse, and severity levels off when it warms up. Does anyone here experience the same?, Increased clunk with warm up?
Hard to embrace the clunk, right? sounds like something will eventually give getting slapped around like that. Might it be a combo of a few things?

BTW - I am done base-lining, everything mechanical addressed. All PM done. rebuilt tranny 10k ago. Cosmetics come next.

I read it’s a bunch of play in the system taking up. Makes sense it would be worse when warm and gaps become larger. I only know what I’ve read on this forum and they all say to embrace the clunk. Guess we’ll see if mine does it but I didn’t remember it doing it when I bought it.

yep, embrace, maybe I will check the adjustment on the transmission cable or whatever they call it. Interesting you believe gaps get bigger with warming up, did not think of it that way. I thought of it like gaps would get smaller as metal expands when they warm up as far as metal to metal contact with gears and bearings. But of course fluids and grease become thinner with heat. Thanks for your perspective.

Clunk is less when cdl is on, might check the rear u joints when they are warm, read it on one of the threads. It does not present like other bad u joint issues I have had on other vehicles, but those were on p/t 4wd's. Those tended to clunk and click on my CJ and Ram.

U joints looked good, gave them a little more grease, checked the slip yokes for bind and there was none. No difference, starting the get use to it.

Anyone know the largest tire size that will fit without a lift? 31? 33?
after searching mud pretty extensively I am going with 33x10.5r15. Some say you can go 12.5, but with the stock 7" rim, i'm cool with 10.5's. have not changed them yet b/c my 31's are newish
