Having been forced into removing the cylinder head on my August 1982 bj42 3b engine ( ser. No 0518803 ), due to glow plug disintegration problems, I am struggling to find the correct torque settings to put it all back together correctly. I have read two workshop manuals on this fantastic forum and have found two choices. For cylinder head bolts either 500 kg/cm or 1000 kg/cm. I haven't bothered to check the rocker torque. Has anyone a reference as to which manual I can correctly refer to as choosing the wrong one could be even more disastrous?

FYI
french documentation about the torque settings for 3b = 1200 cm-kg

Hi Vikor, I have the manual you refer to ,courtesy of this forum, but it doesn't say anything about which years. I also have another which quotes from 1988 and head settings are 500 cms/Kg. My model is a 1982 so I guess the 1200 cms/Kg is probably the one. It could however be a major disaster if it is wrong. Ideally I need a manual which quotes for a 1982 3b.

Here is what my manual shows for 8/80 B series engines - looks like 1150-1200 is what you want. The 3B head didn’t change until 88 I believe, so these values should be right. At least I use all these specs for my 83 so I hope they’re right! :hillbilly:

Hi John, That appears to be the correct manual. Do you have the manuals title? I would like to try and find a copy on this forum . There are other settings I need to know to finish the job properly. The correct wiring diagrams would also be invaluable. Thanks a million.

These are the books I have, courtesy of my PO so I’m afraid I don’t know their source.

If there is anything in particular you need I can scan pages and send them to you - the BJ42 section of the wiring booklet isn’t very long, I could do all of that one if it’ll help you.

That would be fantastic, John. Also the torque settings for the valve rocker arms and the inlet and exhaust manifolds should be sufficient for me to begin reassembling the cylinder head after my decoke without fear of doing serious damage.

Hi Spangly, On removing the glow plugs , one had about a cm. missing. I tried to reinsert a full length plug but felt resistance. Not deterred, I pressed harder and the plug slid in that bit further. That's when I knew it had to be a head off job. I had not done this for about more than 60 years but, what the hell, the old ones are so much easier to play with. Sure enough, there sat the broken end.
