33's vs. 35's for my 80 Series

I've had 35's, 38's , 33's on different 4x4s over the years ... I currently run 33s on my 80 and it's fine , goes wherever I point it and have a stock height ome kit plus 1 inch puck in the front for the anti stink bug. Arb front with 10k warn, WK sliders, labs dual swing rear, 4:56's with harrop and it works great ! At 43 yrs of wheeling and 59 yrs on earth , 33s are big enough and go anywhere a 35 will go ! I don't need 35s much less 37s for it seems a lot of folks vanity of compensations of how things look ... ha

What lift and size did you go with?
That was the iron man 4 inch with adjustable front and rear panhards and the radius arm drop brackets from man a fre. Iron man sells a radius arm drop bracket now as well. I went with dobinsons 4-6 inch lift shocks though because I already had them

I'm getting tires soon and I'm pretty set on 285/75/16, either Cooper XLT AT or Evolution MT.

However I'm on the tired and saggy OEM suspension (all bushings need replaced etc.)

Most forums I've read say 33s won't rub with stock lift, but a lot of people still seem to do the 2.5 OME with 285s. This is a little confusing since I'd always heard the only reason to lift is to fit bigger tires. Am I missing something, or do people just lift anyway since it looks better/more wheel travel etc.?

Also with 33s and stock/saggy height lift, will I be at risk of any more body damage on trails I ran with my stock single cab Tacoma (103 in wheelbase) on 31s? The trails I ran were pretty tight, but I only ever occasionally hit the skid plates.

33s - wish you had 35s
35s - wish you had 37s
Grass is always greener. In some situations I wish I had bigger tires, most of the time I'm happy with my 33s.

Most of the perceived sag is the old tired coils. Replace them and the whole truck will perk up in handling. Not discouraging doing bushings, etc, but your most gain/least pain for the money/labor here is to go with new coils and see where that gets you.

You won't rub with 33s unless you're fitting something crazy wide . People like a small lift to get some additional body clearance if they're in the rocks a lot. YMMV

I'd say they're pretty comparable, with the 80 having just a small edge on taller tires. You should have less skidplate contact because of that with the 80.

A common affliction in the boating world. Known there as "Two Foot-Itis".

Have a 17 foot, want a 19. Have a 19 foot, want a 21.....and so-on.

Not that I would have any personal experience.

I certainly relate to this. However, I’m reminded of an old Mickey Mouse story in which he kept upsizing his boat to accommodate passengers, all to end up back in a rowboat with Pluto. For that reason, I know I am perfectly happy with my 18ft and 50hp. Applied to this thread, 33 it is? Or stock?

As a person in AK whose “life” fits around daily snowboarding every winter, I have no choice. But I also like it.
Then you know that stock height and tires will only get you up and over the pass on the road. Off on the untouched trail of 5ft powder needs a little help:)

This is a funny thread🤣😂how many of you peeps like to wheel the snow?
NOPE.

The most dramatic and traumatic experiences I have had in my 64 year tenure on this planet involved snow. **** snow. I hate it more than you can imagine.

Understandable. We all have different adrenaline rushes that are wanted instead of not wanted. If a rig is gonna be strictly a wheeler then alot goes into it. Tire size and lift is just a small part of this equation.

Snow is my lifeblood, but I understand that. It has taken friends away from us in the backcountry, so I should hate it. I’ve been lucky. The feeling of suddenly dropping a couple feet when an avalanche pops under your feet is NOT COOL.

I do, and that’s why I still I have 315s 😜

As long as you stick to malls and fire roads

Why not go for broke with 5 ton axles and 60" tires, along with a 24 inch lift and 10.58 gears? 3 mpg or bust!
Because then you have a center of gravity issue!!!!

If you're doing hardcore wheeling, it seems you might as well bypass all the bigger-itis and go straight to 40s and tons.

Personally I'd rather have a SFA mini truck for that application. I'm not sure this bus would fit up most of the harder trails here in the Ozarks anyway. To both me and my wallet, it appears better suited as a touring rig on 33s.
