$320 to remove and install alarm sound about right?

My rig came with some non working, craptastic halfassed alarm. It's tied into the harness so removing myself isn't an option. Was quoted $320 for removal and install of a viper alarm that does all the standard viper stuff. No voice. Is that about what I can expect? Should I even screw with that stuff down there or just leave well enough alone?

I had the alarm in my daughters 80 removed for $50-100 if I recall. No new alarm installed.

for them removing it and then reinstalling an entire new alarm into it.. that actually sounds really reasonable to me.

I've removed more aftermarket alarm systems than I care to remember over the years. I hate them. If me, I'd find someone to remove the old one and not go adding a new one to wires that are 20 plus years old.

I'd make sure to know the price of the alarm and the hourly rate they are charging. if you are looking at a couple hundred for the alarm and a couple hours of labor, the $320 makes sense. The prices/rates will vary dramatically from shop to shop so you may contact another local shop to see what they quote.

Is it a 'factory' alarm? If so, I uninstalled mine from start to finish in 30 minutes. It was super easy using the thread in here about it.

Honestly just leave it and only install a new one if you live in a bad area or are in need of a remote start. otherwise save the money and use it towards another mod on your truck ( new headunit or door speakers ! for example )

Realistically for installation and removal alone that price is about on par with some of the higher end shops I've seen. People saying If it includes the alarm it's a good deal need a reality check. My Clifford alarm MSRP was almost $800. I paid $299 on Amazon. I installed it myself having to remove the previous pile of junk that was scotch locked and bjt connectored into it was no fun. Not everyone has enough experience to take stuff like that on, you start removing old scotch locks and stuff and you easily break wires. It takes time to do properly and not damage anything, kind of like how dealerships and repair shops can quote $600 to change your spark plugs on certain vehicles. Sure if all goes well it may take an hour to 3 hours. But what happens if you start snapping off spark plugs? Then it takes a lot more time and effort etc. you're paying for the assurance it's getting done correctly if you can't do it yourself. Tirade over.

You can just put in a keyless entry if you don't need a full blown alarm. Viper makes one. They are pretty much the same thing but without the sensors to trigger the alarm.

Personally i don't like the sensors and only have the ignition kill active on my alarm.

Just had the viper 5706v installed - your about 150 cheaper than me so it sounds like a good deal depending on what's included in that price - im enjoying the remote start system when I take it to the snow.....

I 'yelp messaged' around 6 shops to install this model - all between 400 and 600......that was all in - removal of old and install of new.

Well now I want one with ignition kill. That would pretty much solve all my problems. I do not live in a bad area but car theft happens everywhere. I know that if I wake up one morning and my cruiser is flat out gone there is a good chance it's not coming back. All I'm looking for is peace of mind. Keyless entry, while nice, is secondary. I ordered louder horns and I'm gonna go ahead with the removal and install of this system or maybe one that has a kill switch feature. It's parked 80% of the time in the same spot on the street and I don't want it to grow legs and run away one night. Tried parking closer to the house but my cameras still won't activate when I'm walking around it.

The Clifford I purchased a few years ago is nice. Remote start, keyless, programmable start conditions, it pages you when vehicles being broken into and tells you what area is being broken in. You can check the cabin temp and stuff. When I first installed it it worked up to the full mile away that it was made to do. Nowdays it's a crap shoot. It works from 3/4mile or 1 mile or 40ft and sometimes not when standing right next to it lol. The remote has had a rough life I will say that. Gone through 3 housings on it, sometimes it will remote start from a long distance and will tell me it couldn't, however, the remote page works like a charm. Already chased off at least one would be theif. Had alarm set to silent but with alarm warnings had it page the remote. Chased a guy off in briefs and flip flops with a handgun. Anyway. You can get similar alarms for what I paid off amazon and they have ignition kill and all the good stuff.

If you already have a Aftermarket Alarm (most already come with it built in) or Keyless entry system, both usually have an output for accessories. you may want to check the manual first but here is how you would wire it up.

If your pretty savvy with car electronics you can wire a remote start yourself but if not, its best to have it done by a shop (to get a warranty and all that). It can be pretty costly tho.

If you look online you can find a lot of Alarms that can do a bunch of cool things. (remote start, automatic headlights, roll windows down at disarm, trunk/hatch open, page, dome light supervision..etc)

In a former life I installed stereos and alarms. I certainly have the required know how. But I lack the desire to be upside down in the drivers seat any more. My biggest problem is finding someone to do the work to my standards
