Daughter who is going to school in Hawaii got paddle board for her birthday. She drives 1996 4 runner and needs economical roof rack to haul the paddle board.

I’m familiar with Thule but was curious about any other reputable brands which may be little more economical?

Thanks

if ti has the factory racks theyll be fine, but im going to guess since your asking they dont. yakama also makes racks that would work. i used the fcs soft racks on my old camry for years with no issues but the sup will be wider than the boards i was driving around

If does have tracks and after checking with my daughter this morning I learned it as actually a 2002 model, 3rd gen. Thanks for info, I forwarded it onto the young lady!

if she has the tracks id just try to get the cross bars, the factory ones are rated to 100 lb usually so thatll be more than enough for the board. with the rails the soft rack may be a little bit of a pain as shell have to feed the straps under them

Even a '96 would be a 3rd gen. As previously mentioned, all you need for a satisfactory setup are cross pieces that fit the existing tracks and good straps for securing, although special brackets for a paddle board would be nice.

Paddle boards aren't especially heavy but they are a bit unwieldly for loading on top of a vehicle, especially for a smaller person. My wife would struggle getting hers onto a 4Runner, for example. Possibly the best way to do it is from rear of vehicle, just pushing one end of board up onto the rack first, etc.

Looks like all she may need is some pads and good straps as her 4 runner has rails and cross brackets. Her boyfriend surfs while she paddleboards and he is primary driver so loading on top not that big of a deal. Looking at some options with Rhino she found.
