I did not intend to stir up the big debate about whether 2L-ts are garbage or not. Seems to me from reading on this site and others that they can have big problems if not taken care of. Seems that the 3-Ls have fewer. The 3-L is the engine I have in my Hiace. It's underpowered for what I do. I am wondering about throwing a turbo on it - is it a bad idea? Better or worse than a 1KZ-TE Hiace? I have read about more problems with that engine than with the 3-L, but generally people are writing about a NA 3-L. Any suggestions as to a source of suitable turbos?

Cheers,
-Pard

P.S. if you ever sold a 2lte vehicle I guess you offered full refunds.

nope, i repaired the head issue under warranty out of my own pocket on all the units i sold if the head died with in a year of purchase. i stopped selling the LJ series even though i still had $32000 in units sitting here. they both have had offers on them way back then but i refused to sell a time bomb...
try to find that with other importers...

This is true, most importers will dump these units as quick as possible.
I really don't understand what people mean by "babying a diesel" I get in it, drive it, maybe change the oil once a year and shake out the air filter. I've had both 2l and 3l engines, a hilux and a overloaded 4x4, dually motor home. If I have to change my driving habits because of a weak engine design, I'll move on to something better. I think most people will agree with me,

i know i drive what ever is under the hood and when i find a weakness i either try to imporve the problem or abondon the unit as a POS time bomb...
i really tried to get the 2LTE to be a reliable engine (love the rest of the truck) but after investing thousands into research i gave up... for the amount i sunk into those 2 trucks i could have had a very built HDJ81 or HZJ77...

I run a 91 runner with a "stock" 2LT2 engine. I have installed intercooler, larger exhaust (3"), adjusted the fuel pump and adjusted the turbo charger to about 1,5 bar. This setup works great, I ran it with 1 bar of pressure for a while and have recently boosted it.

Last weekend I ran 1500 km with a 1000kg hanging on for life. Easily doing 50-60mph uphill. Was careful not to drive too hard, but it worked great!

In Norway the problems with the engine is well known, but as long as you change oil and filter often you shouldn't have a problem.

Mine has 225000kms on it, I actually was planning to change it to a 1KZT but didn`t bother. The 2LT2 with some modifications easily beats a standard 1KZT or the 13BT. (I have the 13B in my 40).

My car runs on 35s on the street but I have driven with tires up too 38s.

The fuel consumption wasn't great after adjusting the fuel pump, but there were much more fun... :D

changing the oil prevents head cracking...
interesting...
can you explain this for me?

I dont think any of the L engines had a problem till they added a turbo.

Plenty of them getting around with a few hundred on the clock.

one point he brought up that ihad been considering trying was the intercooler... less heat in = less heat to crack the head...

are you saying the KZ is a HZ with 2 cylnders cut off? cool, no THAT i never knew, thanks

Ive long suspected they share some serious DNA but they look so different out of the engine bay.
Now I know why.The 1KZ have a L and R balance shaft running the length of the block which leaves a bulge in the block.
Maybethats why the 1KZ has its oil pump up front in the timing gear.

Apart from that many parts like thermostat, bottom coolant inlet pipe look like they are interchangeable(unconfirmed).
Alt seems to sit in an identical spot even though the 1KZ is only 50 amp. Aircon pump also sits underneath the alt like a 1HZ.
Some of the sensors inc the low oil sensor also look the same
I seem to remember buying something for the 1HZ and it has 1KZ on it,maybe it was the timing belt;).

It is still a vastly more different engine to a 1HZ than the 1PZ
