hi
we run a fleet of toyotas 2.8 and probably have logged 1.5m klms. all together in harsh terrain and environment. Just recently had head problems in one of the trucks with 200k. The other half of the fleet is mix of Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan pick ups. the weakness are the turbos on the Mitsubishis.

Came over from the TDM website. I wanted to weigh in on this issue: first of all, from everything I've read, using the updated 3L head more or less cures the 2LII cracking problems. Also, I think the cooling systems were not designed correctly for either Hiluxes/Surfs (and I assume landcruisers or prados too). Reason being, my 2L-TE came from a jdm sedan, and the radiator and the fan were both larger than those on a Hilux... and the sedan is probably a lighter vehicle.

I think, if the cooling system is maintained, and EGTs are limited as per Adam's suggestion, the problems can be minimized quite a bit. Personally, I love my 2L-TE converted truck. It's no powerhouse of course, but it moves me around just fine up at 6000 ft. Once I open up the exhaust and bump up the boost slightly I'm sure I'll like it even more.

Edit: and, the main reason why I think Canadian folks have had so much problems from the 2LIIxxx is because they were probably in bad shape before ever getting on the boat to come over here. Even if the rest of the vehicle looks fine, you never know how it was treated mechanically over there. Not to mention the odometer rewind issue...

Andy, there are reported cases of the replacement 3L head cracking now as well.

im not gonna say anything ok i will theres a dealer that has sold about 10 prados and about 15 hiluxes not a problem yet and about 20 prado owners that arent on this site have had no problems at all
so i say a fair guess is about 25% of 2lte s will pop a little worse than the 3b prob over the years then what is it gonna be next year 13bt i also got one of those
i get all chocked up when someones head is cracked

ah but then there are alot that are blown that we dont know about
some people love the 2lts and others hate them

i am sure a dealer that has sold 35 units will admit there is a problem. if he is actually warrantying them he is looking at between $105,000 and $140,000 in head replacements. he woudl love to see this imfo find it's way to his list of customers.

<insert rolling eyes>

no not all of them are warrantied there were a couple with warranties and the others a warranty was available with extra cost!
so with the price of say, a 40,ooo km warranty written would cost about 800 bucks bumper to bumper. not much proffit margin

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a LJ-70 yesterday " 2L, 1986, 4spd manual", and I don't like the engine at all, so I want to replace it with a more powerful diesel engine and an auto transmission. Any ideas what's the best to fit, I'm new to diesel and to auto transfers!

I sold my FJ-70 last month after spending some good time to tune the carb !!

Thanks in advance
Issa

you should have kept the fj70 and put a 3b diesel in it . enjoy!

Enjoy the REGRETING time!! ;)

Anyway couldn't resist the coil springs on that one!! So any idea if I can install a 12H or a 13BT on it or not ?

A use for old 2-Lt turbos?

Earlier in the thread there was mention of many wrecked 2L-t prados. I have a gutless 2.8 Hiace, wondering about the availability of turbos from these surplus 2L-ts and how they would do on a 3-L. I guess the fact that they came w/o turbos suggests it might be foolish to put them onto the 3-L. Any experiences?

I gotta agree with Noswals crushers should take a break , he seems to have had a bad experience with his 2lte but I thought this forum was for toyota enthusiasts . Not negativity I own a 2lte it has shortcomings crusher seems to have started out trying to figure out the engine it' seems easier to bash. Russell

Back to the plate. My brown prado has the 3l head I now have close to 270,000 km and I mean hard km everything checks out I still have a little miss above idle to 2200 under no load when i load it up there is no miss, played with the T.P. sensor ,helped a bit oh well i will figure it out soon anyways I got it with 80,000km dont lug it keep the revs up.

putting a CT 20 on a 3l (2.8) would be a great IDEA it would spool up quick Im not sure if the 2lte exaust manifold would fit it might (not familiar with the 3l) I am sure someone knows out there , (wayne ) crushers would know! I dont mean to talk behind anybodys back but Crushers like us liked the machine to but being a dealer (luxury) cost him warranty problems. that was what I was told ( forgive me if I am wrong)

I have a 3L head, but it is attached to a 3L normally aspirated engine. Wondering about the feasibility and cost of trying to put a turbo from a 2L-T on it, as the engines are very similar.

A turbo kit from Turbo-Glide in Australia for the Hiace costs $2500 AU without shipping.Hoping to do it cheaper than that if I do it.

Cheers,

the 2 LT will NOT fit...
as for this site being for Toyota enthuists it is but it is for honest information... if you want to stick your head in the sand and pretend the 2LT 2LTE and 3L doesn't have head problems then do so but don't be encouraging others to buy those POS engines.
do some reading on the site and see how many heads have had to be replaced, Dan at 4 wheel auto sells anywhere from 1-4 heads a week for these engines.... HELLO, we have a concern here...

wayne crusher I've never encouraged or tried to say theres no issue with the heads .I get people asking all time asking me about my lj78 and I've allways been honest. as for having my head in the sand ,I've read every thing I can about the 2lte including all your "info"thanks for your help ! Russell P.S. if you ever sold a 2lte vehicle I guess you offered full refunds.

PLease. Lets be clear on this for the folks trying to sift through all of this.

2LT - few head issues. 3L - few head issues. They may be gutless but generally do the job day in day out - judging by the few posts we have about these failing and my personal observations.

Early generation 1989 - 93 2ltII and 2lte = problems a plenty and a lot of us have been there.

Not to jack the thread but I recently had a 2LT Hilux and 1HZ (auto) rig drive same road trip and they both used almost exact same fuel (within like 4L in 500Km)....tells u a bit eh.

peace out.
