2L-TE overheating. How far to go?

Driving habits / conditions? Mmmmmmmm

Well, I live a few hundred meters from the sea so I suppose I am at sea level ;)

The tallest mountain in this part of the UK is 886m. The highest I used to wheel my Surf was further north but still less than 1000m elevation.

Motorway driving at 120 kph max. But at that speed for a few hours - motorways around here are fairly quiet.

Biggest strain on my Surf was the horse box + two ponies + tack + camping gear + 2 daughters = 2000kgs. The box when empty weighed 975kgs on its own. Very hilly regions where most of the competitions took place so the truck really did have to step up to the plate.

Best cooling mod was the tranny cooler. Once fitted, I never heard the auxillary fan kick in again (which it always did when wheeling or towing). I even shorted it out one day just to make sure it still worked.

The truck was driven with repect, but not like yer granny!

The Lovely Boyo.....Auto tranny cooler - easily the best cooling mod you will ever fit (if you have an auto that is;))

Did you utilize the lower portion of your radiator that is dedicated to transmission cooling in addition to the new cooler or did you bypass the lower radiator portion?
Thanks.....1978HJ45 ( 1990 LJ78 )

you NEED the original line as that brings the fluid temp up to proper temp in colder climates ...

of course that might not apply to the Southern Yankboys.

First you make fun of my engine
Then you call me a "Yankboy" ..us Southern Goobers find that very offensive:)
We actually have several nights during the Winter where the temp. drops near the freezing level. brrrrrrrrrrrr
..........1978HJ45

my humble apologies for calling you Yankboy ... how about Southern Gentleman, that better?

Southern Gentleman.....yes that will do. Actually my ole HJ45 pickup would look real good on some of the old Southern Plantations that dot the landscape down here.
We are going to drop into the low 30's (F) down here tonight. If it gets much colder we may have to put the local National Guard on alert.:) ...............1978HJ45

Crushers is correct - you still utilise the old system - but rig it that the heat is dumped before is causes problems.

To fit tranny cooler

Remove front of truck

Purchase fluidyne kit off ebay - medium duty - about $40? ish

What's in the box?

Fit into RHS (or anywhere coolish), and rig the ines so that the feed FROM the tranny goes through the cooler first.

Put truck back together and terrorise minis everywhere;)

A colleague of mine had a cracked head in his 1kz-te engine. He was constantly complaining about always using water and lacking in a little power. Eventually after about 6 months he plucked up the courage to venture to the local workshop.

He replaced the head and the block from a unit that had been stripped of all other parts..quite lucky. The original 1kz had been a Jap import, engine only. The import had been fitted to replace the vehicles original 2.8litre (3L) engine.

I had warned him to fit the transmission cooler and not to do 160 kmph constantly on the highway...........but some folk don't want ti listen.

Hello Wayne,

Glad to see you are in a good mood after having your tail tickled...;)

People who just don't listen abound.

Dumb suggestion: get one or two of those LJ7x's with dead engines cheap and set them up with the 15B's you are procuring.

already thinking about it
but
those that want a LJ78 usually want them because they are frugal. a 15BT will put the cost back up to the HDJ81 range.
the 4.90 gearing will not be conducive to a low reving engine, although i have been told that the 15BT likes to rev higher than the other B series engines.

frugal and me don't get along.

Crushers: "Those that want a LJ78 usually want them because they are frugal."
Whats your definition of "frugal"? I drive my LJ78 like your grandmother would and I can never get get more than 22 to 24 miles to the gallon. I thought there were other 70 Series out there that could average 30+ mpg. ...............1978HJ45

see, that is one of the issues that i get contacted about.
fuel mileage, importers are still telling potential customers that the small diesel returns excellent fuel mileage, some even spouting BS of mid 40s !!
reliability: it's Toyota, of course it is reliable ... and then when issues arrise they blame it on the owner and not on the flawed design.

frugal: cheap, missery, always looking for a deal (and ending up with what they paid for)

now before you girls get your panties in a wad, i said "usually". there are a VERY FEW that bought them for the excellent ride, the beautiful body styling, the well appointed interiors.

OK I will give you that one.....I incorrectly assumed your use of the word frugal was referring to fuel economy. Unfortunately by the time us "yankboys" get a 70 Series imported into the States it is no longer cheap ( frugal) especially if the Cruiser has "issues" and requires parts from out of country. .........1978HJ45

"Southern Gentlemen"

exactly what i am telling those that contact me for one, plus known expensive cooling issues... in other words, i won't sell them one.

I have had members of this forum point out to me how cheaply some 70 Series are selling for at Japanese auctions ( and even Canadian auctions) and they can't understand how anyone can ask $15,000 to $20,000 (USD) for the same vehicle in the States.
It unfortunately boils down to supply and demand ( they are in Japan and Canada in large numbers but are basically unheard of here in the States) Am I saying a good ( modified LJ78) is worth 20 grand here in the States...well no....but you can certainly expect to pay more here than you can in Japan or Canada
( again simple economics ) If and when the market is flooded here as it is in other countries I suspect the price will fall accordingly. Perhaps I am living a good life...my LJ78 has been extremely reliable thus far and is driven daily while I am in the country. Take care............1978HJ45

well, CRAP 70s sell for cheap in Japan.
the most recent HZJ77 i was interested in sold IN JAPAN for $18,400 CND, that is without finders fee, auction fee, shipping, customs, compliance etc etc.

so cheap? i don't think so. that is a $30,000 rig in Canada. you can also buy a HZJ77 auto in rough shape for $8,000 CND.

you pays your money and reap the benefits.

The point I was trying to make ( perhaps rather poorly ) was that no matter what an import Cruiser cost in Japan or Canada, it will cost more by the time it arrives in the U.S. I have seen BJ70's that would sell for $5,000 to 6,000 (CDN) in Canada bring $15,000+ (USD) here in the States. I have seen the sellers riticuled for asking 15,000+ when the same vehicle would sell for much lower in Canada but again we are talking apples and oranges. To further clarify my earlier post I am only referring to 70 Series Cruisers that are starting to show up in the States (1985/1986) ...nothing newer. We only dream of Cruisers like you mentioned in the above reply. Did not mean to ruffle your feathers:) ............1978HJ45

nah, i understand what you are saying and agree.

sellers want the most the market can bare ...
what you want to find is someone that sources and sells vehicles for a percentage instead of a fixed price. this permits the customer to dictate his final price.
here is how i work:
you state your budget. ($10K):frown:
i look at your budget and what vehicles have sold for in the past. if i feel i can make it happen (realisticly) then i take on the search.:hhmm:
if it is too low, then i just walk away.:whoops:
i charge 20% of the FINAL bill, so every step that i participate in costs you 20% for my contacts and services.
to work backward.
10K
minus my 20% ($2000)
minus shipping to here ($1500)
minus customs ($1000)
minus ocean shipping ($1500)
minus finders fee in Japan and inspection ($1000)

this leaves $3000 to find a Land Cruiser in Japan :o... it isn't happening.
if you increase the budget to $15K then you end up with $7000 to find a Land Cruiser ... much better chance.

this gives you an idea of the value of cruisers in Japan. add an additional $5 to $10K for ultra clean, low mileage units.

clear?:hhmm:
