2L-TE overheating. How far to go?

In some around about way we are actually agreeing with each other. My "only" issue is when someone here in the States decides to sell (for example) a 1985 BJ70 that he are she has bothered to find, import, and correct any know issues ( assuming they are a honest seller) for a price in the mid teens just to have someone point out how much less the same Cruiser would cost in Country A or B. By stating such a fact they are ignoring the cost of getting said vehicle into the States ( and yes I know how expensive the process is) and are berating the seller for making even a reasonable profit. Just my opinion which I realize is worth only a grain of salt:cheers:..............1978HJ45

you will always run into the "dreamer" or those that CAN"T afford a nice cruiser so they run down others to make themselves feel ... better? a big man? more important?

in reality, MOST of those that run down expensive rigs are "bottom feeder" cheap individuals...

(unless of course the vehicle in question REALLY IS a POS)

Not to change the subject but is it now illegal to import a RHD vehicle into Canada or is it only an issue in certain provinces?
..........1978HJ45

you can import anything 15 years old into any province but you can not register RHD in Quebec.

And I thought our politicians had a monopoly on stupidity.
I assume you can drive around Quebec either to the North or to the South:) ............1978HJ45

oh, i can drive through Quebec cause i am a "safe non-resident" RHD vehicle operator:hhmm:. according to the Quebec mandate, only Quebec'rs are poor RHD drivers ...:ban:
go figure.

and according to them RHD Rural Route postal drivers are better than the average driver in Quebec, now there is an insult!!:bang::confused:

You guys have Quebec....we have California.
Our postal employees are also from the upper regions of the "gene pool":)
.......1978HJ45

We in Quebec in Montreal are only people in North America that don't know how to turn wright on the red light. When you cross the bridge ( Montreal is a island in the midle of the St Lawrence river) suddenly you know.

price.
here is how i work:
you state your budget. ($10K):frown:
i look at your budget and what vehicles have sold for in the past. if i feel i can make it happen (realisticly) then i take on the search.:hhmm:
if it is too low, then i just walk away.:whoops:
i charge 20% of the FINAL bill, so every step that i participate in costs you 20% for my contacts and services.
to work backward.
10K
minus my 20% ($2000)
minus shipping to here ($1500)
minus customs ($1000)
minus ocean shipping ($1500)
minus finders fee in Japan and inspection ($1000)

this leaves $3000 to find a Land Cruiser in Japan :o... it isn't happening.
if you increase the budget to $15K then you end up with $7000 to find a Land Cruiser ... much better chance.

this gives you an idea of the value of cruisers in Japan. add an additional $5 to $10K for ultra clean, low mileage units.

clear?:hhmm:

Hello Wayne,

Considering that a new 70 Series can go for some US$ 50000 - US$ 60000 (or so I was told by the local parts guy, but that is another story) your prices are reasonable.

The problem is, most people want $50K performance with a $10K budget. That is not going to happen.

ah yes, "caviar dreams on a beer budget", i meet them all the time (and send them off to other importers)

The only new Land Cruiser sold in the U.S. is the 200 Series and when properly equipped sells for $70,000+ (USD). The only powerplant available is a "global warming" V8 that averages approximately 13 mpg. Toyota has finally been successful in creating an SUV thats as "tank like" as GMC and Ford.

i love sarcasm:
"Toyota has finally been successful in creating an SUV thats as "tank like" as GMC and Ford."

It was indeed sarcasm...thanks for noticing. You have to wonder what that guy in the "smart car" is thinking when he see that behemoth on his rear bumper. You don't how lucky you are to have access to Land Cruisers that weigh less than 5 tons and go more than a couple of days on a tank of fuel.:) ............1978HJ45

oh yes i do and that is why i started the fight to keep us with the ability to import them (www.ivoac.ca)

Our government set the bar very high on stupidity and unfortunately your government appears to be racing to keep up.:bang:
Good luck with your fight...............1978HJ45

The block is cracked!

So the mechanic stripped down the engine to reveal a 1 cm crack on the top edge of the cylinder of the block :crybaby:

The mechanic cant determine how far the crack goes or whether it penetrates the cooling housing. I could have it pressure tested.....etc. But I dont want to chance it. A engine swap? too expensive. But Im already in for the new head and extras (pump, belts, thermo, etc) which have been ordered up and are on site ready to go.

This engine is frustrating. The guys as Radd cruisers have been patient. They have a short block sitting around so Im getting that recondition. I need to get this truck on the road.

Thanks for listening:rolleyes:

hummm,
and at Christmas time to boot, that has to suck the big one.

I can almost see that smirk on your face from 2,000 miles away:)............1978HJ45

Damm that's funny. :):) I think there might have been some laughter in with that smirk too.
That really sucks. Oh well sh@t happens. If it makes you feel any better from the middle of October to the first week of December I have put in three used engines and a head Job. 2006 Chrysler Picifica oil light was on for three weeks until it seized on the highway. He told us that it was on his way to see us. Sure he was. Next a 2004 Ford F150 that was making a horrible sound that just started that day. Timing chains let go and broke the right cam shaft, poped a hole in the timing cover and valve cover. Yeah right it started that day. A used engine was the cheapest option. Next a Saturn Vue. Timing chain runner mounting bolt broke got jammed into the balance shafts timing chain, that broke and that was the end of that at a 100 kms on the highway. The oil was a beautiful metallic gray that would look great on a hot rod. The final was a 2002 Subaru a with an externally leaking head gasket, front brake job and four new tires. Not cheap.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck Lee. It seems to be going around. I wonder if a PZ will fit down the chimney.

Hope for the best. Take Care

now that is why i don't post empathy posts with 2LTE owners, they get read as being gloating.

i don't gloat when a head goes south, or a block cracks, or the E part of the engine acts up ... it is more of a "for fawks sakes we warned you" ... think of it as a father saying to his kid "don't touch that stove, it is hot", the father isn't gloating when he says later "damn it kid, i told you it was hot" as he drives the kid to emergency. he is just pissed the kid didn't listen.

so when i say "at Christmas time, that must suck" then i am saying it sucks extra bad since Christmas time is supposed to be 'money out the window for gifts' time.

sheesh, try to be a nice guy ... bah humbug.
