Hey Mudders,

I’ve been slowly making progress on the new-to-me motor from rustED71, who graciously gave me his old one to rehab my fj40 after the motor blew up on my wedding day.

Random question: I pulled the side plate screws to paint it and not have to mask them. But I’ve noticed (2) are shorter than the rest. Is there a specific place they go?

I don't recall any of those bolts being shorter, but I think some were longer to attach that hard water line from the heater...
Wonder if some PO mixed up some bolts that went to the timing cover

Have you tried sticking a probe into the holes to see if any are shallower than the others?
I just checked the remaining holes and they are all plenty deep, so the short screws must be from somewhere else. Thank you for the idea!

Parts show 10mm length up til 7501, 12mm length afterwards. It appears a stud was installed to support possibly the heater return pipe (?)

Yea I think you’re right, I circled a bolt that was stuck/sheared off in the motor when I got it. So perhaps the studs made up for that bolt location.

I scraped the paint from the oil galley plug (left most red circle) and figured I should tap and plug?
