I have a 77 FJ-40 with a factory 2F, 4 speed, & t-case. I slung a rod thru the oil pan & it took off a decent chunk of the block were the block meets the oils pan a couple of weeks ago. So now I am looking at parts vehicles to with a decent motor were I can sell/use the rest. My questions are:

1. Are all 2F's the same? If different, which one would be the best to build (newer one out of an 40 or 60 with 4 speed & spilt case)?
2. My trans, t-case, & clutch are in good shape; if I go with a newer 2F, do I have to use the newer 4 speed & spilt case? If so are there mounting modifications to do that?

I have not really decided what to do here. I would really like to convert it to diesel, but it is super expensive. I am also open to SBC coversion and building a 2F. If anyone could help with the above questions or has parts/parts vehicle for a good deal please let me know. Thanks!

Brandon

If it were me Id'e look for a good used running 2F someone is getting rid of for an engine swap. They have been posted in the "for sale" section for around $500.00. Then slowly accumulate parts and rebuild your old 2F.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do .

Second on looking for a used 2f. Cheapest method and keeps it stock. You could also go the 3fe route. I believe any year 2f should mount right up to your tranny. If you find a doner engine with all the smog crap, you could sell it to someone in cali to recoup some cost.

Just out of curiosity, what were you doing when the engine blew? I haven't heard of a f series throwing a rod before.

That's funny I have seen twoLandcruisers w/ 2F's in Knoxville with thrown rods in the last year, one I bought as a parts vehicle & one I passed on.

Driving down the interstate running about 2600 to 2700 RPM. Smoke started pouring from the hood, opened it up & could see the hole in the pan & block immediately.

Side note, may have found an FJ-60 with 2F, 4 speed, fairy overdrive unit, & split case. Anyone done that in a 40 or know of potential fab work/issues/complications?

Depending on the year of the 60, you may end up needing to modify your drive shafts, as 08/85 and later 60 series trans and tcase combos are longer than your current H42 and one-piece transfer case....

an early 2F block had pointed dome top pistons and the later had flat tops. would be something to keep in mind if you ever wanted to do a 2F-E swap as the early pistons will contact the 3FE head (from all ive been told and have read).

1. slight differences. Build the newest 2F you can find. if it is 79-newer, it will have the bolt holes on the block for PS, if it's 81-newer it will have the high compression wedge head & flattops for better power/efficiency.

2. all F/2F/3F look the same in terms of bellhousing bolts and engine mount bolts, though early engines have smaller front mount bolts. Any engine will bolt to any BH/ flywheel/clutch/tranny you want.

Found a great deal on a running fj-60. If I took the motor, trans, & t-case out of the 60 and put it in my 40, would everything mount up in the factory 40 locations, ie motor mounts, transfer case mounts, etc? Is there a change in overall length & would I require different drive shafts? I currently run a Saginaw PS pump on my 40 mounted to the factory smog pump bracket, will this still mount up the same with no smog? Also, does the 60 2F have electronic ignition already & can I swap my header & weber from the 77 fj40 motor to the 81 fj60 motor? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Emboldened for clarity....

What year is the truck you are getting parts from?

08/80 and later 40/60 series used a different rear drive train support that mounted on the bottom of the transmission and sat on a cross member that bolted to the frame on both sides, opposed to allowing the transmission and transfer case assembly to hang off the flywheel housing. The flywheel housing had mounts on the 07/80 and earlier 40/55 series vehicles.

Yes.

Also, does the 60 2F have electronic ignition already?

Yes.

can I swap my header & weber from the 77 fj40 motor to the 81 fj60 motor?

Intake manifold and carburetor will swap across just fine. The header should as well, just make sure there is not a fitment issue below.

fj-60 is an 81, so would I need to remove the trans mount from the 60 & fab it to the 40 frame rails?

So, you will not need to change drive shafts. You will loose your parking brake, as the split case in the 60 does not have a transfer case mounting parking brake assembly; the 08/80 and later 40/60 series use the rear axle drum brakes for the parking brake.

You may find that the Fairey Overdrive unit comes really close to the tube cross member and that it may need to be modified to clear the overdrive unit.

You do not have to, I have seen a lot of people just hang the H42 and split case off the flywheel housing. If it were me, I would loose the mounts on the side of the flywheel housing, and use the later style rear drive train mount. You will likely end up modifying the shifter cane opening in the tunnel if you choose to use the 60 series transmission top cover and shifter cane assembly.

Is the 4 speed trans in my 77 fj40 the same as the 4 speed in the 81 fj60? Just wondering in case I decided to run the 77 fj40 4 speed with the 81 fj60 split case with the fairy OD unit. Any fitment, size, or shaft differences in the two 4 speeds?

Split case transfer requires a longer trans tail shaft, your stock '77 has the short one.......
