Hey you.
Yeah you with the 40.
Wanna play?

Back by popular demand, the annual 40s Only Run. These trips are some of the best days I've spent behind the wheel.
If you're new to the Club or new to your 40, or maybe your 40 has been sitting alone in the corner collecting dust, this is a great day to come out and play with other 40s.

When: August 9th is looking like the date.
Summer schedules fill up fast, so wanted to get this circled on the calendar.

Where:
Trail is from Maxville to Thompson Lake.
The trail starts in Maxville which is 11 miles North of Phillipsburg. The trail is about 18 miles one-way up to the Lake. Maxville to Thompson Lake Trail
I haven't run this trail yet, but @elkun1 has never let us down with trail recommendations. This trail should be fine for a stock 40. You might get some pinstripes down the side (which is expected on all trails). Looks like maybe even a creek crossing or two.

Meetup, Aug 9th:
Saturday morning meetup at 8:45-9:00 am. At the Sinclair in Phillipsburg. 46.33674, -113.31113
Let's plan to leave for the trail at 9:00 am.
There is a large parking lot there, if you're trailering your rig.

Stuff you need:
-Your 4x series rig.
-A good attitude.
-A Radio. We use GMRS/FRS radios for communication. Channel 15. If you don't have a radio, let me know and we'll bring extras. We're also on the Ham radio at 146.460. Not required to have Ham, but it can be useful.

-Standard trail equipment is expected. Fire extinguisher, working e-brake (if you're lucky), radio, spare, etc. Read this as a disclaimer to bring a rig that is trail ready. But also realize there will be air compressors and other misc gear abound, so if you don't have everything OK4WD has in their catalog, don't sweat it.

Kid friendly, dog friendly. We're all friendly!

I'm planning on camping Friday night somewhere around Phillipsburg. If your camping, post up and we can coordinate a group spot.

If you're coming, let us know and post up so we can expect you (and wait for you). 40's Only Run is about hangin' out together, no man left behind. If you have troubles, no worries, you're among friends. And if your Autobahn limit is 45, no worries. Take your time, have fun getting to town.

Headcount for Saturday run:

On the calendar. This is my favorite event we do!

@BigSky406

depending on which 4X series I bring, would determine trail for me, I lean more moderate, scenic than coming home with damage

Any ideas for a trail? Will we try to find something somewhat centrally located for the folks west of the divide? I understand that there is some neat country between I-90 and US-93. It's a bit of a drive, but I need an excuse to make sure all my lights work.

Seth, did you ever get your injection system

thompson lake east of maxville isn't a bad run. would probably want to do an overnighter or else a really long day

I had to look on the atlas to figure out where Maxville is located.
I've been thru there many times and must have blinked and missed it.
not sure of names, but I thought there was some trails west of elk park, north of Butte.

Nope. Not yet. I decided it would be more fun to break my back instead. Had pain so bad it made me physically sick. A couple times I blacked out from pain. Had some paralysis in my right leg. Had surgery. I'm finally healed up enough to start PT next week. That was a bit of a setback. I do have all the pieces picked out though.

Would making it an overnight for the Bozeman crowd make this a deal breaker for anybody?

I have tried to do a bit of detective work to make a list of previous 40s Only trails. Here's what I've been able to put together:
2018 - There was a planning thread, but nothing came of it.
2019 - There was a planning thread, but nothing came of it.
2020 - There was a planning thread, but nothing came of it.
21August2021 - Tobacco Roots (Unknown trail)
2022 - There was a planning thread, but nothing came of it.
17June2023 - McCarty Creek Trail
15June2024 - Rock Creek Trail (Leadville)

If you have additional details (like the 2021 trail name) or corrections, please post them.

Yeah, but I don't know if that was a named trail or road.

I need a rear main seal, but as long as I keep the revs low it's fine..ish. Lets go wheeling. I'll do an overhaul this next winter.

was driving to homer ak for a boat job many moons ago and had just gotten into canada when my rear main decided to quit. stopped at a parts store and picked up some seal sweller and put 2 bottles in and also bought a couple cases of oil and took off. i think within a hundred miles the leak basically stopped. made it there and back home before it had to be replaced. this was a bad leak like 100 miles to a qt, sure wish i could remember what it was called. anyway , some do work to swell that seal for a temporary fix
