This run is not scheduled until Labor Day weekend, so unless there is an early closure, Sand Flat should be alright.

Another vote for Gold Lake. Getting in is just like getting into Deer Valley. But I don't know how crowded the campground will be.

Another vote here for Gold Lake. There is so much to see up there, it is beautiful, not too far from Sac, miles of trails, and stockers won't have a problem. Just my $.02

I was wondering were you heard strawberry was open. I was at ranger station in Camino on 20th and they had heard of no trails being reopened. The horrible red stake is still at trail head on strawberry side. Took kids up there today. I hope it's stays open I miss all toys going by my cabin.

The bottom of Dusy at Courtwright Res would be a great destination. It's a little remote, but really a great spot and the harder core trucks could go and play on Thompson Hill.

It's a long way from anywhere but a really good destination.

I like your thinking Andy

I'm excited to finally make the 45 run and see the Dusy trail...if thats where its gonna be.

Base camp off Tamarac rd near bald mnt , hit all the trails up there , me golfer makes good point good central location lots of trails easy as members want or challenging ?

Loaded up the buggy and my little co-pilot for a scouting trip on Saturday. Headed south to Fresno and met up with Brendan from marlin crawler. He went up to shaver lake with us and showed us the trail entrance. Huge thanks to Brendan for taking the time to guide us.
Parked the toe rig a little ways up the dirt road, unloaded the buggy. Then we checked out a couple of the roads and finally ended up at sand flats. Decided to run the trail to red lake then turned around.
Verdict: great area, beautiful scenery and more than enough room for everybody as well as being easily accessible. That's the good news.
Bad news is that it's extremely dry and dusty at sand flats. It's nowhere near a water source and I could see wind becoming a major issue.
I realize it's a dry year ......

So I'm going to scout out two more locations. One is summit lake near elephant rock just south off hwy4 up here in northern CA. Almost at the lower entrance to Slickrock trail.
I think this might be a better spot but will need to go look at it in person. Plan on going up there this Sunday.

The other possibility is gold lake and the surrounding area.

Here's a pic from red lake.

He should of took you to west lake. It right by sand flats and a super easy trail. Also he should of showed you the big area by bald mountain. Its a great base camp for a large group and you can run bald or drive 20 min to red, coyote, mirror, straberry and west lakes.

1) brendan was kind enough to take time away from his weekend with family and i was'nt about to ask for an all day guided tour.

2) brandon had to ride his street bike up there because his enduro was'nt up and running.

3) this is an event for STOCKERS! so red lake, coyote and most of the other trails are out of the question.

don't get me wrong. i appreciate the input and effort to find a good spot for the event. but we all need to keep in mind what this event is all about. the emphasis is for a bunch of stock rigs to have a good time camping and doing some mild wheeling, if any at all.
georg

West and Strawberry Lakes are rated easy and have the same trailhead as Red Lake. You go to the left where you went straight. Stock rigs do that trail often.

I know Brenden,he went on a run with us last year.
