I just got back from Gold Lake. The 4x4 camp is easily accessed by stock vehicles. There is the short Snake Lake Trail for the better set up vehicles. The other trails (like summit lake/Deer creek to the forest road to the fire lookout at the crags) would be suitable for stockers.

i'll update the first post with some additional info and "prerequesites".

Copied it

1) enough room for 40-50 rigs campling close to each other
2) shelter ( trees and such )
3) close to a body of water would be nice
4) road/trail to the location must be suitable for stockers with no risk of incuring any damage
5) some mild wheeling trails nearby would be a plus
Thanks in advance!

update!!!!!!!

spent the entire day since 6am checking out more spots, looked at 4 of the m today. none of them were all that condusive to what we're after. we looked at summit lake, elephant rock lake, union reservoir, utica reservoir and spicer.

I had plenty of time to contemplate all of this on the way home and here's what i've come up with:

THE 2012 "FJ45 RUN" WILL BE HELD AT SOURGRASS TRAIL IN NORTHERN CA!

this decision is somewhat of a compromise but it's mostly good news:

1) beautiful area, even prettier than deer valley
2) plenty of room to camp
3) lots of shade, soft level ground
4) right next to the river ( great trout fishing especially if you're willing to hike 1/4 mile )
5) not a very busy spot
6) shorter drive than deer valley and lower elevation so warmer at night

bad news:

1) trail is a little more difficult than deer valley, but not by much
2) mosquitos

neither are horrible and this is one of my favorite trails and camp spots. i took my very nice 84 HJ47 down there and drove it all the way to the end of the trail and back out with no issues. bone stock, 31s, open diffs, no power steering and not a scratch, ding or dent. even had my then 2-year-old son with me. :steer:

so that is the plan........ :)

Ps: I was up there a couple of weeks ago with my son.

The most beautiful camping spot I can think of for a big group away from the masses!

Just finished breakfast at IHOP in davenport Iowa. Toploader and I are on our way to the "Black Hills Cruiser Classic" in south Dakota. :steer:

I'll update the post later and will supply all the necessary info.

I'm thinkin I'll be in attendance this year!!!
STOKED!
Haven't been in two years and don't wanna miss another one!

Nice spot. Looking forward to it, Georg. Spent a lot of time up there as a kid - one of my favorite areas.

Georg, If your careful there is stocker trail there. Campbell Lake can be done with care in a stock rig. The down side is that while there is a lot of camping in the area its all small spots good for 4-6 rigs per spot. Great for small groups.
Just as info for the masses for future trips...

Hey Jake.

High lakes would be nice, but the trails might be a but much for the stockers. Campbell lake looks perfect. Long drive .....

Keep em coming!

Hi Georg,

I'm glad I decided to check-in here first before heading up. Bummer about Deer Valley. Is the trail closed all the way up to the beginning of it at the lower Blue Lake?

Do you have directions on getting to the new campsite?

This is what I found regarding the Sourgrass Trail:

"The trail is rated Black Diamond by the US Forest Service. Most obstacles have multiple lines ranging from moderate to advanced. A few of the tougher obstacles have no bypasses helping this trail maintain a tough edge. One no-bypass obstacle, the stream crossing which is a mile and a half into the three mile trail sends most stock 4x4's back the way they came. Wet tires and a steep rocky climb out makes this obstacle exciting - if you can do it. Lifted 4x4's with good ground clearance and a stacked rock or two should get through Sourgrass without any problems. This trail is tight but full size rigs can make it through with careful driving. Chances of rocker panel dings and brush scratches are possible for all. The trail traverses along the Stanislaus River and is quite beautiful; it dead ends at great campsites with secluded fishing pools.
"

Is the campsite past this stream crossing? They make it sound like its not easy to get past this in a stocker, and I'm pulling my little trailer.
