sourgarss trail ........

hey sean.
thanks for the reply and questions. just like the previous event locations, trail difficulty was a major factor when considering where the event should be held. getting in there will not be a problem. the camp site is at the end of the trail. i'll start a new thread with plenty of info very soon.

funny "wheeling story" about sourgrass ......

two years ago, FC and myself went for a quick day trip with our kids and significant others. he was driving his 93 3/4ton 4x4 suburban ( pretty much stock other than 32" MTRs and i was in my bone stock and very clean 84 HJ47 troopie. the suburban had 5 people in it, i had my then 2-year-old son ith me in the troopie. we ran "niagra ridge" and then decided to run sourgrass after lunch since we had plenty of time. yes, there are a couple of smlall obstacles on the trail ( similar to deer valley ) but nothing we were too worried about.
we got to the stream corssing mentioned in seans' report and ran into a group of 5 jeepers. a bunch of TJ "Bolt-On kings". we call them cock-measurers ( because the first thing they do when you meet them is tell you all about all the parts they bought and bolted on the jeep or better yet had installed by somebody else ).
anyways. they were at the "obstacle", filming and spotting each other. i chuckled as well pulled up to them. they saw us coming up the trail, pointing and laughing. the last one finally got past the "tough spot" and now all of them were parked on the trail. beer in hand, watching us.
so don pulls up and asks them if they're going to move their jeeps off the trail. their reply "you really think you're gonna make it?". as they're lauging. so don replies "yeah, pretty sure so move your jeep or i will". that got the point across.
they reluctantly moved the rigs. don took one shot at the obstacle and drove right up. then i did the same thing. needless to say, they stopped laughing. tools!
we never saw them at the end of the trail.......

Thanks Georg!
As usual, we'll be heading up early. Let me know if you need us to do anything (signage, community firepit etc.).

p.s. If you have any of those hoodies w/ the state of CA on back, bring em :grinpimp:

Georg/anyone,

Someone was asking me if you're allowed to brings guns, and if so is there a designated shooting area (i.e. target/skeet shooting)? I told them I didn't know, but I would ask.

Thanks

I don't think that's a good idea ........

I'm not going to tell you to leave your gun(s) at home. If you feel the need to bring a firearm, be it for self protection or whatever, then go for it. A friend of ours took a bear during bow season about a mike and a half up river last year.

However, target or skeet shooting is not a great idea in the area. The valley is pretty narrow with granite cliffs on both sides. Ricochet and loud echoes would be a problem. There will be 50 or so rigs and their occupants at camp, at the end of a dead-end trail. So very little room for error. Last but not least, a bunch of busted up clays is the last thing we need to leave behind for the greenies.

Wanna shoot some clays, go to the range. There's one less than 3 miles from our shop. :grinpimp:

Thanks Georg, I'll let them know.

On a different note, directions:

  • It looks like you take CA-4 E then take
  • Boards Crossing Road/Forest Road 5N75 for 1.5mi
  • Keep left at Forest Road 5N02 for 3.6mi
  • After you go over the bridge make a left on to the dirt road
  • Then ? ( miles to camp, keep left/right, avoid the ?, go over river, watch out for ?)

THE 2012 "FJ45 RUN" WILL BE HELD AT SOURGRASS TRAIL IN NORTHERN CA!

this decision is somewhat of a compromise but it's mostly good news:

1) beautiful area, even prettier than deer valley
2) plenty of room to camp
3) lots of shade, soft level ground
4) right next to the river ( great trout fishing especially if you're willing to hike 1/4 mile )
5) not a very busy spot
6) shorter drive than deer valley and lower elevation so warmer at night

bad news:

1) trail is a little more difficult than deer valley, but not by much
2) mosquitos

so that is the plan........ :)

georg

How bad are the mosquitoes? Are we talking like Deer Valley last year, which was the worst Ive seen it in 6yrs Ive been going, or just a few here/there?
