Does anyone have any input as to whether or not this will be a direct fit? I've done some searching and found a few threads that allude to 100 series steering wheels fitting in our rigs, but many of them refer to 1998-2000 models.

Here are some pics of the steering wheel I would like to get into mine. Again, this is from a 2005 LX470.

Any input is appreciated. I did search, but if someone can find something more definitive that's already posted, that would help too!

it may bolt on, but you will have to forget even idea of having airbag. how i remember 80 airbag is one stage and lx470 is two stage airbag. I test drove one lx450 few years back with i believe GS steering wheel in it.

I thought the dual stage airbags came out with the 100 series and LX470. I think when it comes to safety Toyota would not short change the Land Cruiser and the simiple fact the LX was truly a facelifted 80 with softer springs upgraded interior and clading...

Yeah, this steering wheel is from a 100 series.

Any idea on the airbag issue with GS steering wheels? I would like to maintain my original airbag, for what it's worth. I'm assuming the wheel and my current airbag would not be compatible, seeing as the wheel is from a vehicle equipped with a dual stage airbag?

What about the return to off position for blinkers when you are finished making a turn?

I swapped a new style VW wheel in my VW back in the days. It worked however the blinkers would not automatically turn off while finishing a turn.

The owner of LX450 with GS steering wheel was lexus mechanic and we had a bit of a chat about it. As i remember from 3 years old conversation he said that 80 series were fist generation one stage airbags and all the newer toyota cars 98+ are got two stage airbag and they are not compatible with 80 series air bag system plus each air bag is designed for each model. So in order to keep air bag working you need to keep original 80 horn pad/button in the steering wheel however not every steering wheel will accept 80 horn pad.

I read somewhere what that only option to keep airbags working and change to better steering wheel is to change to LS400 steering wheel and use 80 pad. search will bring few threads here on mud

correct me if I'm wrong.

The steering wheel in the pictue is from an LS400. The LX470 has perforated leather on the steering wheel. The Land Cruiser and LX470 also have a smaller diameter snout (part that attaches to steering column) than the LS. The spiral cable is different on the LS and the LC/LX. I have fitted a '99 LS400 wheel to an '03 100 series LC, but I had to machine the shout to fit the smaller diameter spiral cable. This is not an easy task, but can be done if you have an end mill. The leaher color match was perfect and the airbag fit just fine. If it is wood and leather that you are after, I have a '97 LC and I sent my wheel to American Stitches in Texas and they added the wood and replaced the leather. I also had them increase the thickness of the wheel, which I really like. I also sent a piece of my wood dash to them and they matched the wood perfectly. here is their website... That's a nice looking interior!

I've found one thread that referred to some labeled pictures (they weren't there anymore) of later 100 series steering wheels with fitment issues, but it wasn't clear what they were.

I wasn't really looking for anything specific, but this wheel kind of fell into my lap. I'm gonna pull things apart and see about getting a good assessment.

I should have the wheel in my possession this weekend, I'll update this when I figure out what I'm gonna do.

Yohavos: Assume you got the steering wheel on. How was fit, and did you run into any problems? Trying to figure out my options on my wheel...

I did get it on, and did run into some fitment and other issues.

Fitment:

  • The wheel itself bolts right up, no drama there.

  • The 80 series airbag did not bolt directly into this wheel. I had to make some brackets and shim it a bit for it to fit correctly. Looking at the wheel, the left side bolt does match up to the airbag (but isn't long enough) and the right side is way low. This area needs some attention. Using a 100 series airbag is out of the question, as it is not compatible (as discussed earlier in this thread) with the 80 series system.

  • I also had to remove what I believe was a vibration dampener of some sorts from the 100 series wheel.

Compatibility:

  • The cruise control stalk from your original wheel will have to be installed on the new wheel. Although it is the same plug, the 100 series cruise control stalk is not compatible with the 80 series. This involves removing the rivet that grounds the horn (more on that in a second) and pulling the small bits out. It bolts directly into the 100 series wheel once you pull its cruise control stalk and small mounting plate off.

  • The horn works in the 80 series by a single ground wire run to the steering wheel. It is normally not grounded, except when you press the airbag in, pushing against the 4 springs and making contact between the surface the horn ground is run to and an actual grounded area. I ran a simple push button to the left of my steering wheel that is grounded, and ran my horn ground into that. I was thinking about replacing it with the 4Runner RR Diff Lock switch I had so I can click it on and leave it blaring :hillbilly:.

It was not a difficult job, but takes a bit of time to get right. I would not recommend this, and knowing what I know now, would probably wait to find an LS 400 wheel, or just go ahead and buy a junk wheel to have recovered somewhere. With that being said, I'm happy I did something about my wheel.

Forgot to add, the blinker stalk is far enough back that it was unaffected by the new wheel.

Thanks for the update and the info. Will go LS400 or recovered route. Yours looks great!
