I am looking at a 2000 LC with low miles...I shouldn't worry, right? I have read a few horror stories about the transmission, etc. Any thoughts of comfort? Thanks

Well if it comforts you there are more 2000's without tranny issues than with tranny issues. 'But you makes your decision and you takes your chances' ;)

There are so few many reported that I wouldn't worry about it. If you take into account how many are reported on MUD that have/haven't then take into account how many people aren't on MUD. I would say it's a slim chance. I'd be more worried about the manifold issues. But that's another great reason to buy headers :D

I wouldn't hesitate on a 2000. Mine has 151,000 miles and original transmission. I thinks it's only been serviced once around 100K miles. These things have a reputation for running forever even when they have been abused. You're going to run into some hick-ups here and there, but that goes with any year, make or model. I've seen all the years of 100 series have some sort of issue, but well worth the pleasure of owning one.
I'd make sure the coil packs, timing belt, and starter contacts have been replaced or at least addressed. Those are major issues at 100K miles that I have read about. Will cost close to $2K if these haven't been replaced already.
Good luck!! CRAB

 That'll convince the fence sitters, I'm sure...

Yeah, if it happens, it's expensive, but until then enjoy it. I took my chances, only time will tell. All rigs have issues. On my FJ60, everything attached to the block leaked, failed, broke, shredded, bent, or caused grief in other ways. 80's have the head gaskets and PHH's that are show stoppers. Newer 100's have potential nav issues. The majority never have any of these...

:meh:

Rob, if yours hasnt gone it wont. These things dont show up and explode so far into the life. It seems the inferior part problem shows its cards much earlier, like pre-100k

Go for it, if all else is good. I have 130K+, thousands of which were pulling trailers over mountains, and no tranny problem yet. I am overdue for a flush though.

I have a 2000 also and have only had to replace a coil pack and the lower ball joints. Not to bad considering 157,000 miles.

Consumer reports, a scientific survey on auto reliability, indicates "much better than average" reliability for the 2000 LC transmission. This correlates to a less than 1% reported trouble rate in their survey. Tales of frequent transmission failure must be regarded as the anecdotes of a vocal 1%.

I wouldn't hesitate on a 2000.

- Coil packs tend to fail one at a time so I wouldn't replace all eight.
- Starter contacts give lots of warning before they are a real problem.

and both are easy relatively easy fixes.

Mine has been great for 130K miles. Aside from fluids and filters, the only items replaced so far have been battery, brakes, bulbs, 02 sensors, hood struts, wipers, tires and speakers. I'm overdue on all belts, but upon a quick inspection they looked good.

I've been unimpressed with the leather, carpet and wood trim. They've lower quality and have not worn particularly well compared to the other premium vehicle that we've owned.

My LC now has 136k on the clock. It seems much better put together than my 05 Taco. I love the LC.

I have a 2000 100 series as well....completely stock except for a yakima basket. We've owned it since 60k or so. 125k on it right now. The dealer did the 90k service.

I've replaced:
front pads and rotors
rear pads
O2 sensor
one coil pack

What it is gonna need sooner or later:
right side exhaust manifold
battery

I've owned oodles of 40s, 55s, 60s, Rob G's now sold 80, and this 100 (along with my tundra and the hilux). The 100 series is one of the finer iterations of the land cruiser - hands down. Yes, it doesn't have a solid axle, but riding with spressomon in Moab last year, that doesn't stop it from much.

if my transmission goes out tomorrow - I'll be pissed - but it lasted longer than the 4l60e in one of my work trucks.

160K, only problem other that ripping out the IFS :grinpimp: is both exhaust manifolds. :grinpimp: 11 more days till I get my rhino back:beer::beer::beer:

my Dad's has 98k and all thats gone wrong is the driver side window came off track and the sun roof quit on him. who needs a sun roof? watch out for squirrels, they have eaten his main electical wiring thingy unit twice. pricey! now he squirts red pepper now and then and no more problems.

I have a 80 and love it but i'm on the road and want the 100 for comfort and pulling gear.

Mine is pushing 140k right now and just started the 3rd set of tires. Only major work was two APPS units, and all the brakes, rotors and front bearings. Otherwise it was basic stuff, like starter contacts, timing belt, water pump, throttle body cleaning. The only exhaust problem was a loose hangar clamp behind the muffler.

I am waiting for the Spring thaw to treat the leather, replace all the fluids, new clamps on the CV boots, and it really needs new shocks and an alignment.

Probably just jinxed myself.....
