LOL knew you couldn’t stay away!!!
Welcome back!
Very nice!👍
Welcome Back! What kind of build will this 200 get??

Thanks gentleman! Glad to be back with you all. It's sort of a long story, but my new job had me on the road/away from home 99% of the time. I am based out of SoCal now and will be again when our offices reopen, but until then I am back in CO for a couple months. I figured since I am home, why not do what I enjoy most - working on and wheeling a 200 and hanging out with other guys who love it too. The build thread will be launched soon, just have to collect a few parts and get everything sorted first. A box arrived from TJM yesterday, and there should be another one here tomorrow from Australia thanks to @KCSIII!

I learned my lesson about the low position of 200 series’ alternator the hard way lol

Ah man, shoot sorry To hear. looks like you had a blast until then. The only clean part of your truck is the tippie top of your snorkel, good times. Curious to hear the details. Water depth or mud the culprit?

Looks like an LX in camo? You know they're only built for the mall right? :steer:

Be honest with you I'm glad it lasted until I was back to civilization (be happier if it lasted 15 km more so I didn't have to tow haha). Did a series of mud running with group of Tacoma and FJs, the depth of the mud puddles were probably 3/4 of my wheels but I guess the combination of driving through number of them every weekend did the trick to slowly kill the alternator lol. Sourced a replacement after days of searching in Ontario and finally found one, consulting with my indie garage to explore the possibility of splash proofing the alternator to make it less prone to our dear friend, mud. Interested to see what they come up with!

Reading throughout ih8mud threads I couldn't help but to get rid of the mall look as soon as possible, so many tempting build ideas! Since we are on the topic of mud and mods, here is a bonus picture of Slee's AHC skids protecting my dear globes!

Keep us updated on the alternator project. Interested to see what you come up with. Had a friend in his Jeep experience the same thing but he was able to wash is out at a truck stop and make it home. Seems to still be holding up ok after The cleaning.

Are you running the Toyo mud terrains ? How do they perform on the road and in the rain? I am contemplating Switching Them.

Awesome pics. Me want some sliders! Thanks for that view.

I searched a bit to find deflectors for alternators, didn't find much. There's some sealed and watercooled alternators for the diesel from Australia but I hadn't seen anyone with that on these boards. Perhaps more lift - sensor lift and bigger tires to keep everything up higher above the muck? Then there's the challenge of deeper bogs.

I've been debating to upsize my battery. Not so far as dual batts. Probably just a single group 31. I believe that would help with more runtime in a situation like this with a failed alternator.

Just curious....on Ruby, you went with roughly a 34” RG on the stock 18’s, and on this one, roughly 34’s on Icon 17’s. Do you notice much, if any difference in the way it drives? Acceleration, braking, etc. Reason I ask is I’m due for tires soon and going back and forth on new wheels in a 17 or just sticking with stock. I’m running Spidertrax with the stock wheels at present, so the offset is already close to what new 17’s (Icons) would be.

I looked pretty hard at the VW group water cooled alternator (Phaeton, AudiS6, etc) but I couldn't get an answer on if it was 'waterproof' or 'water cooled'. It is certainly water cooled, but the design looked just as open to me to mud as the toyota alternator. It can be had with a pulley that has the right number of ribs, and is about the same size (with more amps output, another plus).
The mounts are perpendicular to the Toyota mounts, but I think that actually makes a fabbed mount easier to make.
Wrecked ones for experimentation are around $50. Donor Toyota alternator is another $50.

Will definitely keep you all posted about the alternator, upon my own's failure I looked up around internet and couldn't find much. I recall peeps had considered changing the location of the alternator and some sealing it to some extend, but couldn't find anything more promising. The tyres are Yokohama Geolander M/T 33x12.5. They perform beautifully in mud/snow, given they are mud tyres but oh boy do they lose traction in rainy/slushy environment. As per the noise, they are definitely noisier than normal all season tyres on highway. Overall I'm super happy with them!

The sensor lift is on my list when I'm replacing one of the seized sensors, thanks for reminding! Will shoot more pictures of the sliders this weekend. I have bashed them against hard ground couple of times and I can tell you they have performed well so far. Definitely beefier and stronger than one can visualize by the images. I was on the fence before purchasing and been blown away by the quality and the customer service provided by Slee!

Its too late for me to look into that option right now as the replacement's on the way, but that is probably the most robust solutions I have come across. Maybe it's time to change yours with an upgraded one? :D

That looks like some fun mud!

What we still have not heard in previous posts is why the alternator failed. Brushes? Diodes? Before you give up the failed unit to a core charge, please inspect what actually failed inside the alternator. Curious minds want to know why things fail.

These are the ones I've been seeing around recently advertised as water-cooled and waterproof
