Daily driver update:

To all land cruiser folks, ATTENTION: After doing allot of testing and research to learn how to tune my daily drivers shocks and springs to get the cushiest cadlical type ride available. I have learned that using higher spring rates and softer compression is the opposite of what I should be doing. Softer spring rates and stiffer compression damping is the awnser to the optimal ride! (More energy dispated by the shock absorber/damper and less is returned back to you) however with stiffer spring rates (more energy is absorbed by the spring and therefore more is returned back to you)

So to sum it all up, use the softest spring rate possible and do all the turning work with your shock(valving)

How I learned this:

Friends setup:

2018 land cruiser

Profender shocks front and rear with Lexus rear coil springs (softer then stock lc springs) and factory land cruiser coilsprings upfront.

Stock UCA

I took my friends land cruiser to the same bumpy gravel roads and terrain that I test my daily driver on and the thing seemed to float over everything, the ride was much better then my vehicle. Then the idea popped to my head it must be because the shocks are taking care of all the energy as opposed to my setup which has very stiff springs and soft compression valving.

Quick tip: profender shocks are also very progressive, even more so then Kings when comparing standard factory valving. Profender is also much more progressive in the rebound.

What I did:

So I went to my storage room and got a set of old eibach 600lb springs x 16 inch and then took my lc to the garage to replace the front 700lb springs with the 600lb springs. They are the exact same as the king springs linear rate the only difference is the color. Decided not to waste money if I already have something that gets the job done.

From 700lb zero preload to 600lb zero preload the ride height upfront dropped one and a half inches which is perfect for me since I did not need the ride height to be over 2.5 I simply needed the additional wheel travel that came with a extended length coilover.

I also replaced the rear coil springs from old man emu 2722 to the stock lc coilspring with a 4cm spacer.

And man did the thing ride so much better. No more harsh popping. It feels so much smoother and it actually feels like the shock is working. This is definatly what I needed to do from the beginning especially since I was running high end Kings.

My next step is to revalve the rear shocks to have softer compression since all four shocks have the same compression valving and that is not ideal since the rear end is significantly lighter the the front.

Front end valving is perfect.

Overall big improvement and I highly recommend anyone who is having ride quality issues to revise there spring rates.

What I need to know(currently researching, emailing a guy that works in KING, and also experimenting):


1. What do flutter stack diameters change ? ( I noticed that the valving that came with KING had larger double flutter stack diameters than what I was expecting), larger or smaller flutter stack diameters what do they change ?

2. Does adding a thicker flutter shim extend the soft zone or make it softer in general?, can having a thick flutter stack have a counter effect and stiffen the compression ?
3. Double flutter stack vs single flutter stack ? do double flutter stacks make it more progressive ? or softer in the low end?

4. You mentioned on your crawlpedia post that using more thinner shims will have smoother damping then fewer thicker shims is that because the damping curve is smoother (less spiking) or a more gradual progressive curve?

5. On your crawlpedia post on shim stack examples, some of your stack configurations like the Light/Med Compression Stack(Flutter) end with a 1.15" diameter as opposed to other stacks like the standard compression stack ending with a 1.00" diameter. Whats the deal there? what impacts does that have on the ride quailty or damping curve.

6. You have mentioned running the lightest spring possible while maintaining the desired ride height. Since I am fine with having 1-2 inches of lift upfront from stock and I am running a extended length & travel coilover will running a 550(lighter than stock) pound spring be beneficial ?

7. What effects does preload have on ride quality, does adding preload make the spring softer or stiffer, and does adding more preload make the tires want to extend more ? (I have read that adding preload is crucial because it will make the tires follow the terrain better).

I do. But you should mount them as shown in your photo. In my application, I had to mount the sticky part sideways...which can eventually Make the sticky surface to come to leverage with a heavy iPad mounted 24 seven…. If you mounted with the sticky surface vertically, it should do really well.

PS… The magnet is actually in the amount, and all you need in your phone case is a metal plate it can attract. What’s nice about that is that if you have a passenger who would like to use your magnet mount, all you need to do is let them slip a very thin metal piece behind their case and it should work for them temporarily… And they can then just give back the plate when they leave your vehicle or your trip. It also means that any device you can stick a metal plate on will work with those magnetic mounts.

Yeah the metal plate is in the case as sold. I’m using the nite ize Steelie ball, looking to maybe switch it up. Thanks
