heyo-

i am finally sorting out the body harness on the 3FE. i am trying to hybrid a 2F with a 3FE head. so far, the wiring mess isnt as messy as i thought it would be.

i need to know if you can de-smog a 3FE and keep it running. do i need the EGR/EGR vsv? what about the FPU vsv? AI vsv?

the wiring diagram i have shows a CA version with an EGR, and a fed version without. do i need to keep the EGR stuff to keep the computer working?

thanks for the help. when i get my act together, i will start taking photos for future generations... :D

yepper. an '82 2F is the target block. now i just have to figure out what compression i will have once i mate the two. any ideas on that one?

so from another forum, i have heard from someone who put a 3FE in a '40, that the 3FE can be COMPLETELY desmogged. no EGR, no nothin. of course you have to determine just how far that will go. i am going to keep the O2 sensors, the MAF (duh), the TPS, the water temp sensor... but apparently everything else can go.

i wonder if a lack of speed sensor with screw it up.... i figure the system in closed loop should be able to handle most anything though, shouldnt it?

any ideas? forseen disasters?

TIA

The CR should end up about 8.5:1.

The engine will run as normal without smog components: EGR, AI and catalysts.

The timing may need retarded slightly. The ignition map advances the timing when EGR is on. Without the EGR, the timing will be overadvanced under those conditions.

IIRC the speed sensor has some connection to the auto tranny. When I did the 3FE swap into my 60 I retained the manual tranny, thus disconnecting the speed sensor. In over 100k miles I've noticed no problem not having a speed sensor. So, in a word, no.

godwin-

are you all smogged up in your '60? i figured the speed sensor wouldnt be a problem, but i wasnt sure since it appears to be wired into the instrument cluster on my wiring diagram.

thanks for the heads up on the timing, jim. how far to retard? 2-3 degrees, or more like 7? i figure once i get it running, i would do some vacuum tinkering to find the best timing at idle and go from there.

will a 3FE ECU handle a cam? i am inclined to go stock, but i am wondering if putting in a 'better' cam would still work. i have heard rumor of mark whatleys 2F cam... wondering if a similar cam would still function and provide better performance...

wish those '62 guys would post some opinions... no responses on the '60 forum! oh well...

Um.. So the 3FE engines have a computer or something to comp for emmissions?

Yeah, the 60 is running all the smog stuff, but for a few thousand miles I had the EGR disconnected. I noticed no difference in how the engine ran or mileage.

As long as we're tossing rumors around - rumour has it that you can run a different cam in the 3FE. Whatley does a regrind that bumps things up a bit, I have one in my FJ40. Still going on rumour here - the 3FE computer has enough tolerance to accomodate a cam that's a little 'better' than stock.

I don't think you're getting many responses from the 62 guys because this is an area that few have ventured into. Most 3FE's that are rebuilt are rebuilt back to stock.

no check engine light? or did you not put it in?

interesting. i will have to contact him. know his ID for a PM? a cammed and stroked 3FE would be sweet.

yeah, i figured that must be the case. the guys on the 3FE groups mailing list didnt have much to say either. venturing into uncharted waters isnt something i am used to doing with my '40. i should do it more. :D

yep. it runs the fuel control and smog equipment. it is called the ECU, which i would guess means engine control unit. fuel injected vehicles have them.
